Omg, More Drama for Me!! (Long Again!)

S
sfdavis918
I'm telling you, I feel like a magnet for medical drama!

OK, so about 6 months ago I went to the eye dr. because I felt that my perscription for my right eye may have changed. I had just been 6 months before that and everything was fine. So at that time it had changed, but they couldn't get it to exactly 20-20, it was more like 20-25. They did some kind of test nd found that my right eye had a minor problem, but weren't really concerned. They had me go back about a month later to check it again. When I went back it turned out to be an unusal reading due to me blinking. They couldn't get the same reading again. So I go away and all was well.

Well since then my right eye has steadily gotten worse. For at least the last month and 1/2 it has gotten really bad. Even with my contacts in I have really blurry vision in it. I have also been having what I thought was sinus related headaches on the same side and all the way down into my neck. After a couple of weeks of the headaches I went to the regular dr and he started me on antibiotics. He was not sure that was it but we would start there and then if it didn't help we would go on to migraine meds then if that didn't work I would have an MRI done. I finished the antibiotics and they didn't help, but never started the migraine meds.

So after all this time of my eye getting worse I finally make an appt with the eye dr for this morning. When I take my contacts out and he tries to get my vision right with the big "thing" (that they flip powers of the lens and say "is it better here (flip) or here?) he gets to 20-60 and I still can't see anything. So they do the same test that they did 6 months ago and the oddity that was there before is there again and worse this time.

At the thinnest, most sensitive part of the retina it is thinning and he thinks there is fluid behind there. The fluid is most likely a leaking blood vessel. I have to go to see a retinologist this week. (Hopefully Wednesday, but I won't know until Wednesday morning.) I tell my dr that I am kind of nervous and he gave me a little look and said yeah, he was a little nervous too. He said he always tries to stay optomistic, but this is really out of his league and he can't really say what it is going to mean. (I should say that I absolutely love my eye dr. He is super nice and none of this was done to try to freak me out, just to be honest.) Oh, and he also said that my left eye looks the way my right eye did 6 months ago when he physically looks in it, although I have not noticed a change in my sight on that side.

Needless to say, I am really worried. I just hope that the retinologist can get me in on Wednesday so I don't have to wait. If not Wednesay then Friday. I actually talked to him on the phone and he said to try not to worry too much. He said from what the other dr told him it's not an emergency, but they definitely need to see me. He said just think of it as Chapter one of five or six chapters.

Argh!!! So after my weekend fiasco of thinking I might be pregnant, I get a little breather, and now this! At least this one I am able to talk to my family about. It always helps me so much to talk to you guys about this stuff too. If you have read this far, thanks so much, and thanks for being there for me. I will be sure to keep everyone updated as soon as I know more.

keep us postedplease, please keep us posted.
I'm praying for you.

Eye things can be myriad and scary but try and keep a chin up about what it may be. It's wise of you to seek out docs to get this resolved or find out what's going on.

We just had an eye scare to about 45 minutes ago. The pediatrican sent my little sister to the eye dr. immediately because they thought she had a cataract, but it just turned out to be a birth mark of the eye!?!

Hope your appt. ends up turning out as uneventful as hers. I too have MAJOR eye problems & understand your worries.

I will keep you in my prayers. I can only imagine how worried you are, whether they tell you to worry or not it is only natural.

The only thing you can do right now is pray and give it to God and know that He will be with you every step of the way.

This is one of my favorite scriptures and I keep it taped to my desk as a reminder:

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong & courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lourd your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

I'll say a prayer for you and your eye! That is scary stuff.

Keep us posted.

Try to give your worries to God...He has this situation in the palm of His hand and knows the outcome already!!

I will keep praying for you...PLEASE keep us posted!

I love this saying:

"Accept the challenges, so that you may feel the exhilaration of Victory"
A few years ago a friend of mine went through brest cancer and got this saying in a fortune cookie during her treatment.

Good luck you are in my prayers.

Well, they are still not sure what is causing my vision to be so bad. They dialated my eyes again and the retinologist looked every which way at them. He said that there is a haze on my cornea that could be caused from my contacts. I have to get some new contacts that breathe better and also get glasses and wear those for two weeks straight to give my eyes a rest from the contacts.

He did not see any leaking of any blood vessels, so that is good. He did not get the results from the test that the optomotrist (sp?) did though, so he will have to review that too.

So the good news is it does not look like what they originally thought and the retinologist said he does not see anything that would cause him to think surgury or anything. The bad news is they don't know why it's happening and the cornea thing was presented more as something that needed to be taken care of, but probably not the cause of my immediate problem.

Next step is to get the new contacts and glasses and then see the retinologist again on April 16th. I am so not looking forward to another month of not being able to see, but what can you do???

Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. I will keep you updated with my progress.

Thanks for the update!

Did they mention an MRI? The headaches and deterioration of vision made me think that it could be neurological and you may want to get that checked out.

I have expereince with neurological issues - have a cyst with a shunt that I will have to have replaced w/in the next few years (when it bursts) and a benign tumor they are keeping an eye on and will remove when they go in to fix the shunt. They don't want to mess w/ the shunt right now b/c it is doing it's job well and the cyst is life threatening when it grows. So, MRI's are so commonplace to me (2X/year). Anyway, all that to say it made me wonder if you shouldn't mention it to your primary care doc and see what he/she thinks...

Actually that was mentioned when I went to my primary care physician last month. I went because of the headaches and we started out with antibiotics because I really thought it was sinus related. If that didn't work then we were going to migraine meds and if that didn't work we were going to the MRI. I never made it past the antibiotics though because I ended up getting really sick with a cold, and then the eye thing started getting worse. Ugh! I feel like such a problem these days!:D

Another update:

The optomotrist wants to see me again tomorow morning and take a look at what the retinologist saw with my cornea and the hazing. He wants to look before he will give me new contacts and the rx for the glasses. So we will see if anything new develops from that.

So are you pregant?? I am so wondering lol i am still praying for you and your family i know how it is with blurry vision i get that from my contacts and if i wear my contacts too much i build protein which i am sure you have heard that word before with contacts so i mainly wear my glasses and have contacts as a back up.

I am now walking around with just one contact in my left eye. Very strange feeling. They want me to go at least 3 weeks without a contact on my right eye. They couldn't even get a prescription for my right eye to get any clearer. They want to see if going without a contact will reduce some of the hazing on my cornea which should make my vision a bit better. Then I can get a prescription for glasses. I could do it now but it would most likely end up being a waste of money because the prescription would change.

Next appointment is April 8th. Wish me luck getting around until then!:p

Glad to hear about the pregancy... I feel for you having such issues with your eyes it is rather bothering knowning there isn't much they can do and it is a waiting game. :) in my thoughts and prayers

1. What could be causing my blurry vision in my right eye?

It is possible that the thinning of the retina and the presence of fluid behind it could be causing your blurry vision. This may be due to a leaking blood vessel.

2. Why did my eye doctor refer me to a retinologist?

Your eye doctor referred you to a retinologist because this issue is out of their expertise and they want you to see a specialist who can provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

3. How serious is this condition?

At this point, it is difficult to determine the severity of the condition. Your retinologist will be able to provide more information and a better understanding of what to expect.

4. Is this an emergency?

According to your retinologist, this is not an emergency at the moment. However, it is important to see them as soon as possible for further evaluation and treatment.

5. What can I expect at my appointment with the retinologist?

Your retinologist will most likely perform a comprehensive eye exam, including a dilated eye exam, to get a better look at the retina. They may also order additional tests, such as an OCT scan, to get a more detailed view of the retina and its structures. Based on their findings, they will discuss possible treatment options with you.
