SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the proper use of the 'To' and 'BCC' fields when sending bulk newsletters via email. Users confirm that it is possible to send an email without an address in the 'To' line, relying solely on the 'BCC' field. However, the ability to do so may depend on the email client or service provider, as some may require a 'To' address for successful delivery. Outlook Express users specifically noted that they can send emails without a 'To' address, while others, like Yahoo, may enforce this requirement.

I'm just about to send my Dec newsletter and wanted to ask a question. Do I have to put an email addy in the 'to' line or can I just put names in the BCC line? I've always put my addy in the to line and then names in the BCC line in groups but then I receive multiple copies of my newsletter and it takes forever to receive them all (slow internet).

Does anyone know if I can just BCC and not 'to'? I apologize in advance if it's a stupid question. Until PC I never needed to BCC so I don't know.:o

Yes, you can just BCC and not put anything in the To line.

Whenever I emailed in bulk I had to put an address in the "to" line. HTH

I think it depends on what you use for email. I have a few accounts and I can just bcc on one, but I think my yahoo account I have to have an address in the to line or it won't get sent

Hmmm, so now I'm confused. I'm just using Outlook Express. Does it depend on your account or your server? And how would I know if it made it or not if I don't include anything in the to line? Just an error that it didn't send, or would it end up in everyone's spam? No wonder this is confusing!

I put my own address in the "to" line and all of the others in the "BCC" line.

If your email doesn't allow it, when you try to send without a "to" it would pop up a message that says you must have an address in the "to".

Thank you Lynda! I didn't know that obviously! I'll try it next month since I just spent the last hour sending it out with myself in the 'to' section.

I appreciate everyone's help!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to CC someone in a newsletter?

CC stands for "carbon copy," and it allows you to send a copy of the newsletter to additional recipients beyond the primary audience. This is useful for keeping team members or other stakeholders informed without them being the main recipients.

How do I CC someone when sending out a newsletter?

When composing your newsletter email, look for the CC field in your email client. Simply enter the email addresses of the individuals you want to CC, separating multiple addresses with commas. Ensure that you have permission to share their email addresses if necessary.

Can I CC multiple people in a newsletter?

Yes, you can CC multiple people in a newsletter. Just add their email addresses in the CC field, separated by commas. However, be mindful of privacy concerns, as all CC'd recipients will see each other's email addresses.

Is it better to use BCC instead of CC for newsletters?

Using BCC (blind carbon copy) is often better for newsletters, especially if you're sending to a large group. BCC hides the email addresses of recipients from each other, maintaining privacy and preventing spam.

What should I do if I accidentally CC'd the wrong person?

If you accidentally CC'd the wrong person, you should send a follow-up email to clarify the mistake and apologize if necessary. If sensitive information was shared, consider reaching out directly to the unintended recipient to address any concerns.
