I had a host woundering why do they have sales tax after the sh and why they tax Shipping insted of having sales tax before. never had it that way before.

It is a state law. Because we do not charge actual shipping costs (we are usually less) it is considered shipping and handling which is taxable in most states.

From my understanding, a lot of companies pre tax shipping so customers don't think shipping is taxed when it is. PC just doesn't do it that way. Also depending what state you're in, shipping may not be taxed. It just depends on that states laws.

It varies from state to state. We do not tax shipping in IL.

Have her read the back of the sales receipt (top left-hand corner). It clearly states that "Shipping and handling charges are taxable in all states except: AK, DC, DE, IA, ID, IL, MA, MT, NH, OH, OK, OR, UT and WY." Blame it on the state, not PC!!

I did direct sales for 3 years with another company and hosted shows through another line ... we ALWAYS taxed shipping. I had to come to PC to find out that we don't do that here in Ohio!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is shipping taxed instead of the pre-tax sale price?

Shipping is often taxed because it is considered part of the total cost of the goods being purchased. Many states have laws that require sales tax to be applied to all charges related to the sale, including shipping fees.

Are there states where shipping is not taxed?

Yes, some states do not tax shipping charges if the shipping is separately stated on the invoice. However, if the shipping is included in the total sale price, it may be subject to sales tax. It's essential to check the specific tax laws in your state.

How does the tax on shipping affect my overall purchase cost?

The tax on shipping can increase your overall purchase cost, as it adds an additional percentage to the total amount due. This means that when calculating your budget for a purchase, you should factor in both the sales tax on the products and any applicable tax on shipping.

Can I avoid paying tax on shipping?

In some cases, you may be able to avoid paying tax on shipping by ensuring that the shipping charges are clearly itemized and fall under the guidelines of your state's tax regulations. However, this varies by location, so it's important to verify the rules in your state.

What should I do if I believe I was incorrectly charged tax on shipping?

If you believe you were incorrectly charged tax on shipping, you should contact the seller or the customer service department of the company. They can review your order and provide clarification on the tax charges, and if necessary, assist you with a refund or adjustment.
