I do play the piano and can conduct orchestra, band and choir. I am three classes away from my music certification (and have been for 5 years) but I don't feel that those three classes would be enough. I don't even know how to take apart and fix the instruments or tune them, so how could I teach it?

Most of my teachers did not know about all the instruments. You need to know how to assemble them and how to tune them - which isn't bad to learn. For fixing, just refer them to the music store! ...and they will eventually learn their own instruments.

You can play the radio (as my dad used to say)...it is never too young to start...just for yourself and just for fun...I RARELY play in public but I can sit and play for myself (or my kids, they are a kind audience).

On the drums, my uncle built a soundproof room in the basement for my cousin so they didn't have to hear it - LOL! He become the best drummer in Racine for a time and taught students for quite few years. I think you can also get electronic practice drum pads and headphones - thta would save mom!

I have the time now to take music lessons so I might just do it!

As for the kids...we are encouraging the music for sure. There will be a guitar, drum set of some sort and a keyboard under our Christmas tree this year as well as lessons.

I would love to have a space for the kids to "rock out" and as soon as we get around to buying a house...DH will absolutely make them one. For now, we are "renting" from the govt don't even have a garage or family room to set them up.
We will make it work until then!! LOL!!

I own a Double Horn that BigSisGretchen's son is using right now...(she is a new member to this site and she is also MY BIG SIS GRETCHEN...lol) I haven't played it in a long time but I still own it...it was my graduation present...

Awesome! Holton Farkus or another brand?

It truly is my favorite instrument.

I bought mine used in 1988. Somedays I dream of a new one, but mine is great anyway.

Watch E-bay for a few months - I've seen some great ones on there...just get a Holton Farkus or a Conn (I prefer Holton) and watch the bore size. Don't buy anything coming from overseas, they are crap.

See! I'm not the only one! You have 2 Bach trumpets???? Silver? I'd love to have one...I helped my brother buy his when he was in HS and I was in college. Now almost 2 decades later he makes the money, I'm practically broke (DH works as a missionary at a camp) and I can only dream... :)

I also would love to have an oboe someday too.

I got a decent brand new flute about 5-6 years ago. An intern at camp's dad worked at a music store and got me one for $100.00. It is nice to learn on!

Do you ever play your organ? Full pedals or partial?

Both my bachs are lacquer. I want one of the new beadblasted gold ones... again- wanna. My dh plays the organ- it has partial pedals, but thats all he really needs for home practice.

That's neat that DH plays organ - my DH HATES organ! I just wish I could play it like they did at churches in my hometown. Our church used to have a sister church downtown (St. Paul's Baptist) a black church in town. Those guys could rock on the organ! It was always a blast!

Are you guys familiar with Guitar World?

I went out with this guy and the date was going to guitar world as he was looking for one. I know very little about instruments other that the Epiphone guitar I own and played in grade school/ high school. It was SO FUN to watch someone who was fired up about what they were seeing!!!! Both the shapes, colors, sounds, etc. Listening to the customers trying out the various instruments. Some of those babies (middle school?) were excellent! and knew what they were talking about.

My favorite room was the drum section and the cymbol room. Maybe because I'm a metal worker, I could identify with the symbols.

I haven't seen that guy since, but every time I drive past the store, I smile.

We have an upright piano in the house which I love to play - my oldest son plays viola, and my younger son just started playing the bass in orchestra this year - it's quite a large instrument that sits in my living room. I love listening to them play - it takes me back to when I played the violin when I was in sixth grade - lucky for us our school has a music program starting in 5th grade where the kids can take band or orchestra lessons at school.

We don't play any instruments (although would love to know how!)

Funny thing is now we own a guitar!

My MIL was watching QVC and decided she would buy DH a Esteban guitar package. We now have the guitar, amp, learning DVD's and jsut about everything else you can think of that would come with it....

I play the violin...well, not very often. I would love to start playing more again, especially with a group. I think about joining the worship team at church but that's one more night a week to commit to. I just can't right now with three young kids. Maybe in a couple of years.

My lifelong dream is to learn piano though. I will before I die!

I would love to play an instrument. I took piano when I was little but when I was not playing professional by the second month, I quit. HA! I do not like to crawl before I walk!:D

THIS is part of the reason I don't like teaching kids. Most kids are like this. When they can't play rock guitar by the 3rd lesson they are done. Its a rare kid who can stick it out and actually get good at it.

The main problem with me is I am still like that!! My mom has been trying to teach me to crochet off and on for years when I feel the urge to try again. After a few squares I am tired of it and want to do something beautiful! Patience is not a viture of mine!:D
