I'm making the Lava Cake for my party at church tonight. What's it like if you flip it on a plater. Is a pretty or messy looking? Or should I just serve it out of the DCB?

TIA!
Sandi

Serve it from the dcb.....it's not a pretty sight if you flip it, lol....

Serve it out of the baker for sure. I had a consultant try it flipped and made a BIG mess in the process, needless to say she was pretty embarrassed.

Not only is it messy, when it's still warm the icing bubbles like lava-hence "lava" cake -and that in itself sells them on it.

I keep meaning to try it in the DCB, I always do it in the Rice Cooker Plus and when I flip it and they see all the hot icing dripping down the sides and the middle of it overflowing with icing I get all the ohhhh and ahhhhs

Hahahaha! That's what I thought, but I thought I'd better check! It will stay warmer longer, too. Thanks for the quick response!!

Sandi

I flipped it once and decided I'd never do it again. lol At least not for the chocolate lava cake--maybe if it was the pineapple upside down cake or something more decorative like that. It's nice in the baker because the baker is pretty, keeps it warmer longer, and then you can just put the lid back on to save the left-overs (if you're at home and there are any left-overs anyway...) ;)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to flip the lava cake out of the pan?

The best way to flip the lava cake is to let it cool for about 5 minutes after baking. Then, run a knife around the edges to loosen it. Place a serving plate on top of the cake, quickly invert the pan, and gently tap the bottom to release the cake. If it doesn’t come out easily, you can gently shake the pan or tap it a bit harder.

How can I ensure the center of the lava cake is gooey?

To ensure the center of the lava cake is gooey, it's crucial not to overbake it. Follow the baking time closely, and start checking for doneness a couple of minutes before the recommended time. The edges should be set, but the center should still jiggle slightly when you gently shake the pan.

What toppings pair well with lava cake for serving?

Popular toppings for serving lava cake include a scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, whipped cream, or a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce. These toppings complement the rich chocolate flavor and add a refreshing contrast to the warm cake.

Can I prepare the lava cake batter in advance?

Yes, you can prepare the lava cake batter in advance. Simply mix the ingredients and pour the batter into the greased ramekins or baking dish. Cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to bake, remove them from the fridge and bake as directed, adding a minute or two to the baking time if they are cold.

What should I do if my lava cake doesn’t have a gooey center?

If your lava cake doesn’t have a gooey center, it may have been overbaked. To troubleshoot for next time, ensure you’re using the correct baking time and temperature. Additionally, consider using a thermometer to check the internal temperature; it should be around 120°F for a perfect gooey center. If it’s too firm, reduce the baking time slightly in your next attempt.
