Creating the Degree Symbol: A Quick Guide

In summary, you can use 0149 to get the degree symbol on a Mac, and ° !° in Word on Windows. There is also a Character Map in the Accessories menu in Macs and Windows, and the character you want copied to the clipboard is 54 77 6f 20 67 65 65 6b 73 20 61 72 65 20 77 61 6c 6b 69 6e 67 20 64 6f 77 6e 20 74 68 65 20 73 74 72 65 65 74 2e 20 54 68 65 20 66 69 72 73 74 20 6f 6e 65 20 73 61 79 73 2c 20 22 44 6f 20 79 6f 75 20 74 68 69 6e 6b 20 61

What do I click on to make the DEGREE symbol instead of typing Degree ... I know... I should know this but hopefully someone out there can tell me??? :)

On Mac, it's option-K. On Windows, hold down alt and type 0149 (I think) on the number pad. (It's been a while since I was on a Windows machine, but I think that's the number to use.) There's also a little program in the Accessories (Start>programs>accessories) that has all those special characters. And if you're in Word, you can always go to Insert>Symbol and select it from there.

Start-->Accessories-->Character MapFind the character you want and double click on it. That will copy it to the clipboard and you can paste it here:It is 19° in Milwaukee this morning.Alt + 0176 should also give you the ° symbol, the character map will tell you the keystrokes for special characters you might want to use.°¦§¨©ª«¬¯¯®±²³

And if it's for a recipe on your website, use ° !

°[giggle] That's like reading the shoutbox. [/giggle]

“What?” I exclaimed, “I can't believe that bothers people!”lol

Ok, call me a geek...I've been out working on conveyors, came back and saw KG's post and thought to myself "oooh...binary" with a smile of delight...

Now, I will admit, being happy to see binary is geeky!!!!

...and I agree on the shoutbox...I ALWAYS forget I can't use quotes there!

Ann, I miss mac shortcuts! I keep wanting to try to do option R for the registration symbol. PC has too many numbers to remember!

I love that joke! I just sent it to my dad. When I was in college my sig line was:
There are 10 types of people in the world; those that understand binary, and those that don't.I had a lot of people ask me about the other 8 types! And I found a whole new group of geeky friends.

Thank you! I have been wanting to know how to do this for nine years!! This is great!! Okay, now how do you type one and 3 fourths? 1-3/4 , 1&3/4. I know there is a way...I just gave up on computers when I was introduced to it in 1984...1010101010101010101AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Are you guys talking about me binary my back?

I remembered where the other good binary reference was - Family Guy. There's an episode in which the family goes to a museum and there's an exhibit with a "living diorama" to illustrate binary. It's Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, reciting strings of 0's and 1's.

Let's try it this way...counting down from 10 in binary...

1010
1001
1000
0111
0110
0101
0100
0011
0010
0001

So, you see, you're 01 in 10.
