I just sold a Rice Cooker to a woman and she wants to know how to cook unprocessed rice from the health food store. I have no idea since my family eats minute rice :D Anyway if anyone knows please help.

Thanks,
Brittiny

I do not know either since my family would strock if I tried to shop at a health food store  Anything that I have cooked in it though, I just followed the microwave instructions on the package maybe with a few tweaks to how long I cook it.

We eat a lot of brown rice at my house and here's how I do it in the microwave rice cooker:

1 cup brown rice, rinsed
2 cups water or chicken broth
Dash of salt

Place all in rice cooker and attach lid. Put in microwave for 10 minutes on high and then switch to low for 35-40 minutes.

This also works for regular white, jasmine, basmati, and similar rices, except you want to reduce the "low" time to 15-20 minutes.

The U&C card has info on cooking "real" rice. It doesn't shorten the time, but it does keep the rice from boiling over, burning, and taking up space on the stovetop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of rice is best for cooking unprocessed rice?

For cooking unprocessed rice, long-grain varieties like basmati or jasmine are popular choices due to their fluffy texture. Brown rice is also a great option as it retains more nutrients, but it requires a longer cooking time. Choose the type based on your preference for texture and flavor.

How do I rinse unprocessed rice before cooking?

To rinse unprocessed rice, place it in a fine-mesh strainer or bowl. Rinse under cold running water, gently swishing the rice with your hand to remove excess starch. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear, which helps prevent the rice from becoming gummy during cooking.

What is the ideal water-to-rice ratio for cooking unprocessed rice?

The ideal water-to-rice ratio varies depending on the type of rice. For white rice, a common ratio is 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. For brown rice, use 1 cup of rice to 2.5 cups of water. Always check the package instructions for specific recommendations.

How long should I cook unprocessed rice?

The cooking time for unprocessed rice depends on the type. White rice typically cooks in about 15-20 minutes, while brown rice takes around 40-50 minutes. Always bring the water to a boil first, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.

Can I cook unprocessed rice in a rice cooker?

Yes, a rice cooker is an excellent tool for cooking unprocessed rice. Simply add the rinsed rice and the appropriate amount of water to the cooker, close the lid, and select the cooking setting. The rice cooker will automatically switch to warm mode when the rice is done, ensuring perfectly cooked rice every time.
