A 6-year-old boy who broke his arm near the elbow six months ago has been struggling with limited flexion despite extensive physical therapy. After a long arm cast and numerous therapy sessions with limited success, an orthopedist has recommended further intervention. The child will undergo a procedure under general anesthesia where the arm will be manipulated while being viewed via x-ray to identify the cause of the limited movement. If a bone issue is detected, the arm will be rebroken and recast; if it’s a soft tissue issue, additional surgery may be required. The situation has also affected the family's personal business and daily life significantly, as they have been managing therapy and a new baby simultaneously. The family is hopeful for a resolution soon and has received supportive messages from others wishing for a successful outcome.

My 6 yo DS broke his arm near the elbow over six months ago. He was in a long arm cast for almost 5 weeks and, as a result, he lost flexion in his arm. He could not bend it past 90 degrees (meaning he could not bend it upwards to touch his shoulder). We have had dozens of physical therapy sessions since October. There was some improvement last December, but it was not sustained. We gave physical therapy one last try (with a different therapist and some different exercises) over the past two months and still no improvement.

We saw the orthopedist yesterday and he determined that it was time to do something. This coming Monday, he will be put under with general anesthesia, and have the arm manipulated while viewing it with x-ray. The intention is to determine whether this is a bone problem or a soft tissue problem. If it is a bone problem, they will rebreak it and recast it. If it is a soft tissue problem, he will need further surgery.

Please pray for his arm to get back to normal, and for God’s grace and strength for us! It has been a long road and we are happy that there will likely be some resolution soon.

Of course my business has taken a hit over the past six months. The arm was broken on 9/9/09 and I had my 2nd DS on 9/20/09, so it hasn't been easy! At one point we were going to therapy 5 days a week! My team has suffered as has my personal business. I am looking forward to things getting back to normal!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my son's arm heal completely after surgery?

In most cases, yes. Children generally have a remarkable ability to heal, and with proper care and rehabilitation, your son's arm should heal completely. However, the extent of healing can depend on the type of surgery, the severity of the injury, and adherence to post-operative care instructions.

How long will it take for my son's arm to heal after surgery?

The healing time can vary based on the specific procedure performed and the individual child's health. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months for full recovery. Your child's doctor will provide a more accurate timeline based on the surgery performed.

What signs should I look for to ensure my son's arm is healing properly?

Look for signs such as reduced pain, improved mobility, and the absence of swelling or redness around the surgical site. Additionally, your son should be able to gradually resume normal activities as healing progresses. If you notice increased pain, swelling, or any unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

Will my son need physical therapy after surgery?

In many cases, physical therapy is recommended to help restore strength and mobility to the arm after surgery. A physical therapist can provide exercises and guidance tailored to your son's specific needs, which can significantly aid in the recovery process.

What can I do to support my son's recovery after arm surgery?

To support your son's recovery, ensure he follows all post-operative care instructions from his doctor, including taking prescribed medications, attending follow-up appointments, and participating in any recommended physical therapy. Additionally, providing a nutritious diet and encouraging rest can help promote healing.
