Search set for missing GJ woman
By GARY HARMON The Daily Sentinel

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Authorities plan to start searching the Grand Valley this weekend for Paige Birgfeld, the mother of three who apparently fell victim to foul play in connection with her escort business.

Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey said investigators have defined some areas they would like to search for clues about the fate or whereabouts of the 34-year-old woman, who was last seen June 28.

Family members reported her missing June 30, and the next day her car was found ablaze in a parking lot about two miles from her home off a private road, Oleaster Court, on the north side of Grand Junction.

Her background as an exotic dancer, escort and owner of a modeling agency quickly became the focus for investigators.

Leads in the case are plentiful, and “there are some pretty interesting people for us to look into,” Hilkey said. The investigation had narrowed to “a handful” of persons of interest, he said.

Frank Birgfeld said Tuesday he continues to hope “somebody can tell me where my daughter is.”

Investigators were jolted Tuesday when they were told of a woman’s body in the Colorado River in Grand County, Utah, but they determined that afternoon it wasn’t Birgfeld.

Hilkey briefed Birgfeld’s family on Tuesday night about plans for a search.

The search will use law enforcement and the Jennifer and Abby Recovery Center, Hilkey said.

The center was founded in an effort to find Jennifer Blagg and her daughter, Abby, who were reported missing in 2001. Jennifer’s body later was unearthed in the Mesa County Landfill, and her husband, Michael, is serving a life sentence for her killing. Their 6-year-old daughter, Abby, remains missing.

Investigators in the Birgfeld case have focused not only on reconstructing her life in the period just before and after she was reported missing, but also on the days and hours of the people they have classified as persons of interest, Hilkey said.

“It’s a very active investigation,” he said.

Birgfeld advertised her adult-entertainment services as Models Inc. on Craigslist and at

www.naughtynightlife.com, promising high-class entertainment and imploring customers not to invite her to “filthy residences” or seedy motels.

Many clients knew her as “Carrie,” authorities said.

She also had operated Grand River Acupuncture for about a year out of a Grand Junction office building.

Birgfeld is described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall, 110 pounds and has sandy hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing blue denim shorts and a blue strapless top with flowers on it.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 244-3500.

Gary Harmon can be reached via e-mail at [email protected].

Sifting through secrets
Wednesday, July 11, 2007

On the basis of outward appearances, Paige Birgfeld lived the life of a by-no-means-atypical suburban mom. She lived in a spacious home in a relatively upscale portion of the Grand Valley and, as a twice-divorced housewife who retained a model-like figure and good looks, was constantly on the go trying to make ends meet for herself and three young kids.

But Paige Birgfeld also had secrets she hid from her family and friends — secrets that quite probably led to her disappearance late last month.

Local investigators are trying to sift through details of her secret life in hopes of discovering the clue that will lead them to the missing woman. To his credit, Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey has devoted not only his entire investigative staff to the search for Birgfeld, but has enlisted the assistance of two Grand Junction Police Department detectives in the investigation.

Birgfeld is the 34-year-old, single mother of three who was last seen June 28 after meeting with her first husband, Howard Beigler, in Eagle. She was reported missing two days later and on July 1 her 2005 red Ford Focus was discovered after being set ablaze about two miles from her north Grand Junction home.

Birgfeld has been described as a smiling, friendly woman, a charter member of the local MOMs club and a successful Pampered Chef consultant.

Her secret life included operating an adult modeling and escort service. Many of her clients knew her only as “Carrie.” Last year, she opened an unlicensed acupuncture clinic. We’ll leave it to readers to surmise what sort of services “Carrie” provided in connection with her “escort” business.

Despite that double life, investigators are convinced Birgfeld was a dutiful mother who would never have abandoned her family or voluntarily leave Grand Junction with no intent of returning. Investigators believe that Birgfeld probably was the victim of foul play, most likely related to the “escort services” she provided.

But that doesn’t mean investigators have ruled out other suspects. Hilkey says they’ve had full cooperation from Birgfeld’s two ex-husbands — Beigler and Rob Dixon, the controversial former board member for the Grand Junction Rural Fire Protection District.

Baffling cases such as Birgfeld’s frequently turn on a single piece of evidence or a public tip. That’s why the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone with information about Birgfeld to call 244-3500.

If law enforcement authorities are correct in their assessment that Birgfeld was the victim of foul play, it’s quite likely that a killer is on the loose in Grand Junction or elsewhere in Western Colorado. One can only hope that sheriff and police investigators determine what happened to the secretive Paige Birgfeld and that a break in the case comes soon.

Legacy, thank you so much for these updates that you have been doing. It has been the last place I look before I go to bed and the first thing I do in the morning and when I return from work. For some reason, I never thought Paige would stay missing this long... I am praying harder than ever for her to be safe!

Thanks...because of the time difference, it's 8:00 AM here when it's midnight in Colorado. Newspapers usually post the new daily editions then.

Doing it makes me feel we're keeping Paige's presence here.

(I am beginning to fear the outcome though...but not ready to go there yet. And I am truly shocked...and saddened... to realize how many women are missing out there.)

Kris

please bump periodically for those just signing on...thanks

What Paige is, or was, or what she did, or didn't do, in her life is irrelavant. While I understand that her secret life is likely key to her disappearance, she is a daughter, a mother, family member and a friend that needs to be found.I'm incensed at this "newspaper" for publishing the web address of her alter ego. That is sensationalism reminiscent of the famous yellow journalism of the late 19th Century. It is possible to report her secret life without promoting all the other ecorts who use that address.I think Gary Harmon is an irresponsible newspaper hack, unworthy of the title of "journalist." His editor, who approved his copy, deserves the same critisism.

I am hopeful yet saddened by that first article...

Hopeful that it sounds like they have some leads to follow, glad that they are starting a real "search" but saddened that it has been so long and that there seems to be less and less of a chance of finding her safe and alive.

I REALLY thought she would be home before conferences began...this just makes me sick. I pray that God gives her family the strength to move forward each day and deal with this roller coaster of events. I pray for her safe return to her family and children...I am just at a loss for words.

KG~ I agree wholeheartedly about these "journalists" who continue to sensationalize the details of this case. There is NO REASON for some of these details to be made public- all it's doing is creating looky-loos who don't give a rip about Paige. This world is just a mess, and these crappy reporters/editors are just the tip of the iceburg!

The devil truly uses any means available to him. While I could care less what Paige did or didn't do to support her family, this is exactly how they cause so many of us to become numb to what's really going on in this world today. And when we become numb, we start accepting things that are not of God.

Thanks Carolyn. I just did a quick check and didn't come across any new news...which given that they are actually starting to do 'that' kind of search today, I am kinda glad.

Will get back on a little later and do a more thorough check of websites. (The gym is calling.)

I heard yesterday that nothing at all has been mentioned at conference about her. I dont know what I expected but looks like something would have been said - ribbons or anything.

Its just all too sad. They keep focusing on her "double life" and while it must be the reason for her disapperance, I wish we would hear more about Paige the mommy and Paige the person....who had other careers too, including PC.

  • #12
Yes, it saddens me to see her portrayed in such a sensationalized way.

In this day & age, it is all about being the one that can say "you saw/heard it first here, blah, ba blah, ba blah"

I hurt & pray for her family that has to deal with all of this, but remain grateful that her name is still out there.

  • #13
No, nothing has been said at all. Other, non-CS cheffers know, but I overhear conversations that are all rumor and heresay. It's sad that they don't have the whole story and I just can't go around trying to educate everyone.

  • #14
Yeah, I was wondering about conference. Was she planning to go?
What wave would she have been in?

  • #15
Ya know, no matter what has been said in the media, you would think HO would address it with at least a moment of prayer! PC is supposed to be all about family & she is our sister, not to mention Paige as a mother!
It **sses me off!

  • #16
Thanks leggy for continuing to update us! There's still hope that they will find her okay....I'm not giving up on that!
These reporters have no hearts, do they? I agree KG, they can bring up her other life without actually posting the website. I just feel for her family.

I'm probably in the minority here and will generate some disagreement but, I didn't expect HO to say anything, unless she is found and maybe not then..... or maybe on the last day.

Like KG said people are talking. Not everyone attending knows and if HO mentions it then it stirs up more emotions. Those who don't know want to hear then the focus is off why they are there to learn more about their business. I also don't think they are avoiding it because of her "other life". I don't see Doris judging her. I'm sure she has prayed just like the rest of us.

I don't fault Doris for not mentioning it either...... We all know what a good heart she has, and for all we know she has or will contribute or contact the family.

Consider how many consultants we have in the sales force. We all have tragedies everyday in our lives,
I know just since spring of 3 consultants who have lost a husband, 1 a child another a brother and of some who lost family during 9/11. none from natural causes.... but we didn't hear about it from PC . Nor, do we hear when a consultant dies.

My kids know how I'm watching newscasts that I don't normally watch or reading parts of the newspaper I don't read for info.
Last night at dinner my husband asked about her. He remembered how we had emailed each other over the "original inventor" of the mix and chop in May.

When we got home my oldest son sent me an email saying he was praying for my friend Paige and gave me 2 of his favorite Bible versus to look up and read. He ended by saying she was in God's hands, and he had asked his friends to pray for her too.

Off my soap box now! Sorry, to ruffle feathers

Amen to that KG!!!!

I posted something like that a few days ago...but just a sentence, not an eloquent paragraph as only you can do! :)

No feathers ruffled here - you make a lot of sense. If you don't mind sharing, what verses did your son share with you?

  • #22
Philippians 4:6-7
Matthew 6:25-34

  • #23
Teresa, I agree with you. I think it would be a very hard topic to address at conf. There really aren't a lot of fact to share that would answer anyones questions, or put fears to rest. It might cause a lot of pain and confusion in a place of fun and excitement. I'm sure they have the legal team working on it too, because there really is only so much they can or should share. I hope we get an email or something at somepoint, but that may not happen either. We know that the "people" in PC are praying and supporting the family, even if the company doesn't do it directly.

  • #24
I do agree with Teressa. I really did not expect HO to do anything during conference with so many consultant's they run the risk of offending someone else that thinks someone they know should have been singled out. It would have been nice for them to do but really only the ones from CS and her cluster would probably really appreciate it since we are the Consultant's that are really concerned about it. I do not intend that to sound mean but that's like when I hear a story on the news I am more concerned with it when I know the person - I think we are all like that.

And although I hate the Paige's other lifestyle is being the focused, we all know that would be the case with anything connected to "escort." That's our world and the news media. Personally, if it will help find Paige it does not matter to me if they print it or not. After all this is a business that she chose to do, so, apparently it does not bother her or she would not have chose it.

I am sure my last comments ruffled some feathers, sorry if they did but that is my feelings. And these feelings do not make me any less concerned.

  • #25
I generally find sensationalism in journalism distasteful..... but in this case, if it going to help the case, then so be it. It draws more attention to her story because it's "scandalous" and maybe one more person will pay attention to the news because of it. Maybe that person saw her on the street with a guy.... maybe you wouldn't think twice about seeing an "escort" with her client on the street normally... but if you knew that this escort was a missing person, in retrospect, I hope you would report the tip.

  • #26
I agree with all of you and Teresa I'm heading off right now to go get my bible so that I can pray "with" you!:)

Teresa Lynn said:

these are very good versus Teresa! It is true that we are to pray and give it to God and quit stressing over it! We have been taught to thank God for our prayers believing that we received them, because that is the prayer of faith and that is the only prayer God can really get behind!! It is God's will that Paige is alive and that she will be found and brought home, we don't have to ask, "if it be your will?" because it is and it says so in the bible and God is not a respector of persons, he loves us all the same! (Christian or not, Jesus died for us all not just "the Christians!" So, when I'm praying, I don't ask "if it be your will" because I know God's Word and it is his will that ALL of his children be safe and happy! And when you believe that, you can really pray and get the results you are looking for because when God is for you, who can be against you?

Okay, I'll get down off my soapbox! I'm just very passionate about prayer and the propper prayers that get the results we desire, and that is praying in faith and knowing that we know that we know, that His will is for our good health, safety and happiness! And I've been taught that you know this by studying the Word and that is sooo true! All that I've said here is based on what we are taught by our pastor and he supports everything he teaches with The Word!

I just spent some time reviewing newspaper and network websites. Don't see anything new. If anyone hears anything from today's search, please post.

(I did come across some crime bloggers who are familiar with Grand Junction...they expressed strong surprise that someone could actually manage to keep secret an escort service in a town that size.)

"Allison Chaynes" might not be so good, though.

There is nothing on that page that would aid anyone in recognizing her. All it does it increase the titilation factor, which this case needs like Colorado Rockies need a place kicker.

I hope she returns home soon. As far as her double life goes , i think it is stupid that they have to bring it up and publisize about it. Now what is that going to do to her family and children not to mention her PC career.
It was her private life. Now made public. She was a single mom who did what she had to do to give her kids a good life in a nice house.
If i had to i would do those things too.

  • #43
in all fairness, they have to mention the "other things she did". Like her father said several days ago, this isn't related to a disgrunted PC customer. I agree that there is no need to post the websites and details, but the info needs to be out there. People would probably not put it together if they knew Carrie the escort and the news was talking about Paige the PC lady.

  • #44
It seems like the media only dwells on the negative and hardly ever about the positives in peoples lives. I wish they would talk about Paige's positives knowing that family and friends are reading their stories. I'm just concerned about the children and how all this is affecting them. My heart and prayers are with them and the family and for a safe return for Paige.

No, she wasn't planning on going to conference; if she had she would have been in Wave 2.

As far as Pagie goes, I can seperate what she did for a living, that I frankly don't really care either way about it. I know her--the important things, her spirit, and where she stood on issues and most importantly, where I stood in her opinion. I am not pretending like some of those wackos I've seen to be her best friend, but through some tough times, I learned a lot from her and about her.

Like someone else said, I didn't figure they would announce it at conference. Yes, one of our fellow cheffers is having a huge crisis, but if they announced every crisis in every consultants' lives, we'd be hearing one every day. I'm sure Doris will contact the family in her own time if she so wishes.
Instead of using our time being angry at whoever, our time is best spent praying for her & her family. If we're going to be thinking about Paige, then let's focus on positive thoughts from hear on out....if all of us are positive that she will come home safe, then she will:)
