Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients do I need to make a strawberry shortcake from scratch?

To make a strawberry shortcake from scratch, you will need the following ingredients: fresh strawberries, sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, unsalted butter, milk, and heavy cream for the whipped topping. Optionally, you can add vanilla extract for extra flavor.

How do I prepare the strawberries for the shortcake?

Start by washing the strawberries thoroughly. Remove the stems and slice them. In a bowl, mix the sliced strawberries with a couple of tablespoons of sugar. Let them sit for about 30 minutes to macerate, which will draw out their juices and enhance their sweetness.

What is the best method to make the shortcake biscuits?

To make the shortcake biscuits, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk gradually until a dough forms. Turn the dough onto a floured surface, knead gently, and roll out to about 1-inch thick. Cut into rounds and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

How do I assemble the strawberry shortcake?

To assemble the strawberry shortcake, slice the baked biscuits in half. Layer the bottom half with a generous amount of macerated strawberries and their juices. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top, then place the top half of the biscuit over the cream. You can add more strawberries and cream on top for an extra touch.

Can I make the strawberry shortcake ahead of time?

Yes, you can prepare the components ahead of time. The strawberries can be macerated a few hours in advance, and the biscuits can be baked and stored in an airtight container for up to two days. However, it’s best to assemble the shortcake just before serving to keep the biscuits from becoming soggy.
