Does anyone know a good way to sharpen the old style white kitchen shears?

I'm calling a potential booking/recruit lead tonight, and she had asked me this question last time we chatted - I'd really love to be able to give her the answer tonight when we talk!

They are self sharpening. Hers are probably loose and therefore not sharpening themselves anymore. She has to tap the bolt (not the right word, but I can't think of the word I'm looking for) that holds the blades together so it's tighter.Okay, I am not describing this well at all....hope you can understand what I'm tryign to say! LOL!!

You can fold up aluminum foil and cut through it several times to add a little oomph to the self-sharpening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I sharpen old style white kitchen shears at home?

You can sharpen old style white kitchen shears at home using a sharpening stone or a honing rod. First, clean the shears to remove any debris. Then, hold the shears open and run the sharpening stone along the blade edge at a 20-degree angle, applying light pressure. Repeat this several times on both blades, and finish by honing the edges to refine the sharpness.

Is it safe to use a knife sharpener on kitchen shears?

Using a knife sharpener on kitchen shears is not recommended, as shears have a different blade design than knives. Instead, use a sharpening stone or a specialized shear sharpener to ensure you maintain the proper angle and avoid damaging the blades.

What materials do I need to sharpen kitchen shears?

To sharpen kitchen shears, you will need a sharpening stone or honing rod, a clean cloth for wiping the blades, and optionally, a lubricant like mineral oil to help the sharpening process. Make sure to have a steady surface to work on for safety and precision.

How often should I sharpen my kitchen shears?

It is advisable to sharpen kitchen shears every 6 to 12 months, depending on how frequently you use them. If you notice that the blades are not cutting as smoothly or require more force to cut, it may be time to sharpen them sooner.

Can I take my kitchen shears to a professional for sharpening?

Yes, you can take your kitchen shears to a professional for sharpening. Many kitchen supply stores or knife sharpening services offer this option. They have the right tools and expertise to ensure your shears are sharpened correctly and safely.
