I had a customer want to know can you use these to cook in also?

I'm confused by the customer's question. A colander is for draining. How, exactly, are they hoping to cook in it?

BTW, my initial reaction is no, that's not what they're designed for.

Perhaps for use as a steamer...My gut reaction is also no. Different solders are heat resistant to different temperatures/times and an item make for cooking would have to withstand longer sessions of higher heat than a colander is usually exposed to. But if she really wanted to know, you could write to the test kitchen and ask.

And if she's looking for a steamer, we have one of those, too.

No. We asked in the test kitchens and they said that they were not designed to be used in that way.

That was my initial answer too but wanted to ask. I did tell her there was a steamer though ;)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cook in a stainless steel colander?

No, a stainless steel colander is not designed for cooking. It is primarily used for draining liquids from food, such as pasta or vegetables. Cooking typically requires direct heat, which a colander cannot provide.

What can you use a stainless steel colander for?

A stainless steel colander is ideal for rinsing fruits and vegetables, draining pasta, and straining liquids from cooked foods. It can also be used for cooling foods or as a serving dish for salads and snacks.

Is it safe to put a stainless steel colander in the oven?

Generally, it is not safe to put a stainless steel colander in the oven. While stainless steel can withstand high temperatures, the design of a colander, which has holes for drainage, is not suitable for cooking in an oven environment.

Can you use a stainless steel colander on the stovetop?

Using a stainless steel colander directly on the stovetop is not recommended. It is not intended for cooking, and doing so could lead to uneven heating and potential damage to the colander.

How do you clean a stainless steel colander?

To clean a stainless steel colander, simply wash it with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. For tough stains, you can use a mixture of baking soda and water or a stainless steel cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and dry to prevent water spots.
