So this is going to be one of those "DUH" questions but I'm going to ask! The new Maple Pumpkin Trifle in the Simply Sweet Cookbook says to use a can of pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling). I ran across a can of pumpkin in my kitchen from last year. It has the pumpkin pie filling recipe on the side. Is this the can I want to use or is there something different? I've only made pumpkin pie once before so this is something I have no clue about!

The can should say either "pure pumpkin" or "pumpkin pie filling." It sounds as though you should use the first and not the filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use canned pumpkin pie filling instead of pure pumpkin puree for the Maple Pumpkin Trifle?

Yes, you can use canned pumpkin pie filling as a substitute for pure pumpkin puree in the Maple Pumpkin Trifle. However, keep in mind that canned pumpkin pie filling is pre-sweetened and spiced, which may alter the flavor profile of your trifle.

Will using canned pumpkin pie filling affect the texture of the trifle?

Using canned pumpkin pie filling may result in a slightly different texture compared to using pure pumpkin puree. The filling is usually thicker and creamier, which can still work well in the trifle but may change the overall consistency.

Do I need to adjust the sugar or spices if I use canned pumpkin pie filling?

If you choose to use canned pumpkin pie filling, you may want to reduce the amount of sugar and spices in your recipe, as the filling is already sweetened and flavored. Taste as you go to achieve your desired flavor balance.

Can I still add maple syrup if I use canned pumpkin pie filling?

Yes, you can still add maple syrup to your Maple Pumpkin Trifle even if you use canned pumpkin pie filling. Just be cautious with the amount, as the filling is already sweetened, and you may want to adjust accordingly.

Is there a difference in flavor between using canned pumpkin pie filling and fresh pumpkin puree?
