Trouble with Doubling Cake Mix: Will it Taste & Feel Right?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

When doubling a cake mix recipe from 9 oz to 18 oz, it is normal for the batter to become thicker and pasty, resembling brownie batter. As long as all ingredients are doubled proportionally, the cake should still bake properly. The final texture may be denser and chewier, similar to a brownie, rather than light and fluffy. To check for doneness, insert a toothpick into the center; if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.

HI-
I am making it right now for a show tonight. My question is I doubled the recipe from 9 oz cake mix to 18 oz. Is it supposed to be pasty like a brownie batter or runny like a cake? Mine turned out pasty like a brownie. It's baking as I speak. did I do something wrong? As I doubled the mix I also doubled the rest of the ingredients. I'm arfraid of how it will turn out- taste and texture wise?? HELP!

It is normal for the batter to be thicker when you double the cake mix. As long as you doubled all of the other ingredients too, it should turn out fine. You can check it by sticking a toothpick in the center to see if the cake is cooked through. If the toothpick comes out clean, it should be okay. If it's still a bit gooey, leave it in for a few minutes more. As for taste and texture, it will likely be more dense and chewy like a brownie instead of light and fluffy like a cake.

Hi there,Doubling the recipe can sometimes change the consistency of the batter. It's possible that the batter may be a bit thicker and more pasty due to the increased amount of ingredients. As long as you followed the recipe correctly and doubled all the ingredients, the end result should still turn out delicious. In terms of texture, it may be a bit denser and fudgier since it resembles a brownie batter. However, it should still have a cake-like texture once it's baked. As for taste, it's hard to say without knowing the specific recipe you used. But as long as you followed the instructions and measurements accurately, it should still taste great.I hope your dessert turns out well and is a hit at the show tonight! Let us know how it goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I double any cake mix recipe without changing the ingredients?

While you can double most cake mix recipes, it's important to consider the proportions of wet and dry ingredients. Some recipes may require slight adjustments to maintain the right texture and flavor. Always refer to the specific instructions on the cake mix box for guidance.

Will doubling the cake mix affect the baking time?

Yes, doubling the cake mix will likely increase the baking time. A larger batter takes longer to cook through. Start checking for doneness a few minutes earlier than the original recipe suggests, and use a toothpick to test if the cake is fully baked.

How can I ensure the texture is right when doubling a cake mix?

To maintain the right texture, make sure to mix the batter thoroughly but avoid overmixing, as this can lead to a dense cake. Additionally, consider using a larger mixing bowl to accommodate the increased volume and ensure even mixing.

Will the flavor change when I double the cake mix?

Doubling the cake mix should not significantly change the flavor, as long as you maintain the correct ratios of ingredients. However, if you're adding additional flavorings or mix-ins, be cautious not to overdo it, as this can alter the overall taste.

What should I do if my doubled cake mix batter seems too thick or too thin?

If your doubled batter seems too thick, you can add a small amount of liquid (like water or milk) to achieve the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, consider adding a bit more flour or cake mix to thicken it up. Always adjust gradually to avoid overcorrecting.
