Say 'Yes' and Uncover New Opportunities

Sometimes ideas that can be applied to PC biz are found in random and unexpected places. This weekend's USA Weekend newspaper insert has an article about Fall movies, with little tidbits about them. In the paragraph about Yes Man, Jim Carrey's next movie, they write:

"Yes" was the battle cry behind the scenes on this Jim Carrey comedy about a man who begins to embrace every opportunity offered to him. Director Peyton Reed reported that several crewmembers tried saying "yes" to everything for a day, sometimes with surprising results. "A crewmember, who had avoided a guy for a while, finally went out with him, and they continue to date, to this day," Reed says. And the other people report that the "yes strategy" helped them with parenting.

Instead of worrying about things that may not be an issue (that show's too far away, the host doesn't want my recipe of the month, etc.), try saying yes to the requests. You'll make customers and hosts happy and may uncover new opportunities for yourself.

Obviously, there will be situations to which you can't say yes. Like when someone wants a show when you already have a family commitment. That's when it's OK not to say yes. But try it for a week, or even a day - I'm going to.

This is very interesting. Now, if everyone around me will adopt the "yes" thing, then I wouldn't be so reluctant to pick up the phone.

So how can we apply this concept to our PC businesses? Here are a few ideas:1. Say yes to hosting a party at an unconventional location: Maybe someone wants to have a Pampered Chef party at their office during lunch, or at the park while their kids play. Instead of saying no because it's not in a typical home setting, say yes and see what kind of new customers you can reach.2. Say yes to offering a special deal or discount: Instead of sticking to your regular pricing and policies, try saying yes to a special request for a discount or deal. It could attract new customers and show your flexibility and willingness to accommodate.3. Say yes to trying new recipes or products: If a customer suggests a recipe or product that you haven't tried before, instead of brushing it off, say yes and give it a chance. You may discover a new favorite that you can share with others.4. Say yes to collaborating with other consultants: Instead of viewing other consultants as competition, try saying yes to working together on a joint event or promotion. It can benefit both of your businesses and create a stronger network within your company.5. Say yes to stepping out of your comfort zone: This could mean saying yes to speaking at a larger event, trying a new marketing strategy, or even just saying yes to something you wouldn't normally do. By pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, you may find new opportunities and growth for your business.So take a cue from Yes Man and start saying yes to new and unexpected opportunities in your PC business. You never know where it could lead!
