Interesting question at my show tonight - "How do I get the bump off my stone? It's like a zit and everytime I scrape up my food, I hit the zit. But, it never goes away."

So my question, can one "sand" a stone in any way to get rid of this imperfection? She doesn't have a receipt and didn't purchase it from me. I know it's part of the stone so I'm worried anything too forceful would break the stone. I told her I would see what I could find out and get back with her.

I'd email the test kitchen with this one.

Yep, that'd be my advice, too.

1. How do I remove bumps from stones using household items?

One method is to use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. First, dampen the stone with water, then sprinkle baking soda on the bumps. Let it sit for a few minutes before pouring vinegar on top. The reaction between the two will help to dissolve the bumps. Scrub the stone gently with a cloth or brush, then rinse with water.

2. Can I use sandpaper to remove bumps from stones?

Yes, sandpaper can be effective in removing small bumps from stones. Use a fine-grit sandpaper and rub it gently over the bumps in a circular motion. Be careful not to apply too much pressure or you may scratch the stone. Rinse the stone with water after sanding to remove any residue.

3. How do I know if the bumps on my stone are natural or man-made?

In most cases, natural stones will have a more irregular pattern and texture to their bumps. Man-made stones, such as concrete pavers, will have a more uniform and consistent appearance. If you are unsure, you can consult with a professional stone specialist for a more accurate assessment.

4. Will removing bumps from a stone alter its appearance?

It depends on the method used and the type of stone. Some methods, such as using chemicals or sanding, may alter the appearance of the stone. It is always best to test a small, inconspicuous area first before attempting to remove bumps from the entire stone.

5. Can I prevent bumps from forming on my stones?

There are a few ways to help prevent bumps from forming on stones. One method is to regularly clean and seal the stones to prevent dirt and debris from getting trapped and causing bumps. Another method is to avoid using harsh chemicals or tools on the stones, as they can cause damage and lead to bumps. Additionally, proper installation and maintenance of the stones can also help prevent bumps from forming.
