SUMMARY

To reconnect with old friends without making the conversation feel business-oriented, initiate contact by expressing regret for the lost connection. Engage in casual conversation about their lives and interests, allowing the discussion to flow naturally. When they inquire about your life, mention your new business venture as part of the conversation rather than the focal point. I have some people on my list of 100 (not quite there yet!) who I was close with at one time but we have lost touch. I have a chronic bad memory and not really sure if I was a bit flaky and that's why we lost touch or not. What is the best way to get back in touch with them and not make it seem like I'm just looking for "business"?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Just let them know you are sorry you lost touch. Chat with them for a while, see what they have been up to. When they ask you, let them know that you just started your own business.

Let it flow naturally into the conversation. One way to do that is to ask what they're doing. It's natural for someone to ask that question back. Really, the best way to make contact without it seeming that you're doing it just for business is to make contact without it being about business. Look at it as a way to renew friendships. If it leads to a PC contact, great. If not, that's okay, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I initiate a conversation with an old friend without bringing up business right away?

Start by reaching out with a warm greeting and ask about their life. Share a personal update or a fond memory you have together. This sets a friendly tone and allows the conversation to flow naturally before discussing any business topics.

What are some topics I can discuss to keep the conversation light and friendly?

Focus on shared interests, hobbies, family updates, or recent events in your lives. You can also talk about mutual friends, travel experiences, or favorite books and movies. This helps to strengthen your personal connection without the pressure of business.

How do I know when it’s appropriate to mention my business?

Gauge their interest by observing their responses. If they ask about your life or career, it may be a good opportunity to share what you’re doing. However, if they seem uninterested or change the subject, it’s best to keep the conversation focused on personal topics.

What if my friend directly asks about my business?

If they express curiosity, it’s perfectly fine to share a brief overview of your business. Keep it light and avoid a hard sell. You can mention how it fits into your life and then pivot back to personal topics to maintain the friendly vibe.

How can I follow up after reconnecting without making it about business?

Send a casual message or text thanking them for the conversation and expressing your enjoyment in catching up. You can suggest meeting again to continue the personal connection. If they later express interest in your business, you can address it then, but keep the focus on friendship first.
