Ot: Wanna Help Me Narrow Down Names?

In summary, there is a conversation about narrowing down boy names and the author shares their experience with popular names and how they chose their child's name. They also discuss voting on names and the popularity of certain names. They mention their current pregnancy and the uniqueness of their chosen names for their child. They also mention how their chosen names have become more popular since their children were born.
Sure can! I can appreciate leaning toward different names. I grew up with a very common name (for the 70's) and it wasn't always that great. LOL... One year in grade school, there were THREE Lisas in our classroom.. and while the teacher tried the first name first initial of last name it didn't work cuz me and another Lisa both had last names that started with the same letter! LOL..

I placed my vote!

Placed my vote! ;)

I voted!

When I was pregnant - we had pretty much decided on the name Jacob - we both loved that name. Then, a week before he was born, there were several news articles out about the most popular boys names, and Jacob had been #1 for 3-4 years in a row. As much as we loved the name, we decided we didn't want DS to be the 3rd Jacob in his class - so we went back to the drawing board - and now, we can't imagine him being anything but Micah!:)

Voted too...the only time I "disagreed" with the crowd was on Mason...I voted thumbs down...way too many young kids named Mason lately...not very unique.I really like Karson or Carter...

I voted the same way you did, Janet!

I know that DS has 2 Masons in his preschool class.

My DS is a Jacob. I had no idea that it was the number one name for several years when I named him. If I did, I would have chosen another name - but now I can't imagine anything different.

When we named Mason we had never heard anyone named that. After we chose the name they seemed to have popped up everywhere. But he's still Mason, as opposed to Dylan (which is way more popular) that we had picked out before I got pregnant.

With this one, we weren't able to find out the sex, but we're not telling anyone the names we've picked out because again, it's names we've never heard anyone have (although they aren't way out there like mine!), and it's kind of fun that way. I figure in 4-6 weeks everyone will know, including us!

I have a Carson, I have only met a girl spelled with a K. But of course I like the name :)

My oldest DD is an Emily. We did that even knowing it was a popular name. Get this: She is the ONLY Emily in her entire Kindergarten class of 100+ kids!

My husband and I were just talking about that the other day. We named our son Mason... 11.5 years ago. It was unheard of then.

And our daughter, Mekenna.... we totally thought we made that name up, 9 years ago! We were so proud of ourselves, because there were NO Mekenna's around. Now, there are McKennas, Mackennas, Mekhennas, etc etc!

We like to think we set the trend. :D

Wait, does this mean your scan yesterday showed a boy??? Did I miss a post somewhere?? Oh, I am so excited for you! :)

Funny, I know a few Masons turning about 11 or 12...and DD goes to school with a Makenna that is 12.

Our names were far from original...Samantha - I always liked the name then had a friend in Jr. High named Samantha...loved it that she could be tomboyish and feminine all in a whim with her name. My daughter is Sammie though...she is so girlish and hates the nickname Sam... (The "ie" was my doing...but she LOVES it...)

Kyle was just because we wanted a strong, simple name...we aren't Irish...and every boy name I could think of I knew some jerk in school that had that name and did NOT want to name my kid after him!

Kyle has turned out to really fit him...his nickname is KyGuy :)

Kyle would have been Alyssa if he was a girl...

Darcy...is the middle name a family name? Just wondered since you seem set on that!

So...a boy, huh? Cool!

I have a hard time cuz if a name reminds me of someone I don't like, or if someone I know has a child named such and such, I don't feel like we could use it. Hopefully Evan won't be in kindergarten with 3 other Evan's!!

I always love the "ie" or "y" nicknames for the girls. Danielle: Danny Samantha: Sammy, Nicole: Nicky. Our last name is Farley so I ruled those names out. My daughter is Shannon and when we picked the name, it wasn't even in the top 100 names for the last 5 year. When she was 3 she did gymnastics. Out of 5 kids there was 3 Shannon's in her class. HUH!!? Growing up I had 2 older girls in the neighborhood that I looked up to. Shannon and Michele. SO that is her first and middle name. (She was going to be Wesley if she was a boy...yup from Princess Bride)Then with my son we tried to do a sort of uncommon name but not sooo different. I grew up with Keri-Lyn as a name so it can be not so fun to have a hard spelled different name. So we had a list of names and we sort of thought Aiden. It was the #1 name the last 3 years. So we decided not to. So we went with Bryan. His nickname is BryGuy. :) He was going to be Jillian if he was a girl. Pretty fun stories.

I put in my vote. My kids are Regan ( girl) and Parker ( boy) We got the name Parker from Desperate Housewives. My oldest son is Kyle and there are way too many Kyle's in the world but not many Regan and Parker's that I know of. :)
Good luck!!

My daughters are Madelyn (was Lauren until I saw it everywhere!) and Carolyn. Maddie or Mads and Carly or Carl for short. With Mads, we know a bizillion Madison's who go by Maddie and there is always someone who calls her Madeline. I never really thought that Carl would have as much trouble but there are 2 other Carly's in her combined classes (they team teach at our primary school)! So she had to pick being called Carolyn or Carl......she totally went for Carl.
Personally I prefer more mainstream names. I can't tell you how many times my kids have come home with name lists and I have seen the most horrendous names and spellings. How frustrating must it be to constantly have to tell everyone how to spell or even SAY your name!
If my girls had been boys they would have been Jacob Samuel. I never choose a girl name for my son...I always knew he was a boy. We just had to decide which would be first...Andrew or William.

Yes, it's the name of our first son who passed away when he was a baby due to severe birth defects. His name was Taylan Matthew Speed.

So this one will be "Unknown" Taylan Speed for sure!

It's funny because the two names I tend to like the most are the ones everyone hate's, ha ha, I have totally odd taste I know (Macklin and Camlin)

I love love love the name Parker! I would have used that buy one of my girl friends just had a little boy last month and named him that. Same thing with Landon, loved that but another girlfriend named her boy that last year.

I get parker from As the World Turns :)

We like different names, too.We like to name our kids something not too traditional as well. We have two boys, named Wyatt Gabriel and Hudson Paul and are expecting brother #3 in June.

Right now we are leaning towards Riley James or Riley Evan. I love names that end in -er like Tucker, Skyler, etc. but our last name ends in -er so it's too -er-er.

Thought you might like either Wyatt or Hudson, we've run into a few other Wyatts but not in his same class, and I've heard of other Hudsons, but not in person.

Happy name hunting!

Check out the website Nymbler - Your Personal Baby Name Assistant

it's cool, you can pick names you like, and then it gives you similar names to choose. I have been spending way too much time on there and here!

Thanks for the site suggestion!!! My cousin just had a baby and named him Wyatt (can you tell there's lots of little boys in my circle ha ha) but Hudson is definately a name I would lean towards. I don't know what it is with me and quirky names but I'm totally into them :)

  • #25
My brother's kids are Spencer, Campbell and Kirby. Those are sort of quirky. (That is meant with love to them.:))

  • #26
I voted! I have a Gabriella and Cooper, step-son is Shea. We were going to go with Parker, but went with Cooper instead for the baby!!

  • #27
I love original names! I'm with Carter, but have to say that we almost named my oldest Carter. It was weird because when we looked at him he was Definately a Samuel. My husband's name is Jace (like race, but with a J). So, that is his middle name. Turned out good we didn't name him carter, since my husband is a stunt/high speed driver at work, he would have taken a lot of flack for having a Cart for a son.

I have a friend with three sons, they named them Kaiden Smith, Kodah Smith and Keller Smith.

Also we had friends that named their son Holten Grant and Talon James

I like traditional names- Matthew John Robert would be the name I would choose for my son, and either Leah Corine, Emily Rose, or Olivia Nadine for a girl...

Anyway, enjoy your little munchkin, no matter what name you choose!

Don't you hate it when people spell it with a "Y"! Drives me nuts..... bad thing is it now drives my Sammie nuts too! LOL the things our kids pick up on! Recently my Sammie has started writing Sam on her school papers... I can not figure out if she is just being lazy or if her friends afe calling her Sam (which I do not like... she can go by it when she gets older if she wants but not right now... Sammie still sounds like a little girl)

I picked Samantha for most of the same reasons Janet stated.

My little guy is a George.. It's a family name and we wanted something straight forward and strong. We call him Georgie for now.

my friend has 3 boys... they are Truman, Braxton and Grahm

My member name says it all! I love different names and my husband loved traditional names. I wanted Madison and we settled on Madeline. We call her Maddy. I'm glad we went with Madeline as there are a lot of Madisons. The only problem is that although we picked a more traditional spelling, people still say "line" instead of "lyn." Our son is Owen, which is a traditional name, but I went with it because it was way down the list of popular names. I intentionally looked past the top 100. My SIL's kids are Zack, Jaiden (girl), Ace, and Tallen (both boys).

I voted as well! It was fun. I do like the name Karson, I just prefer it with a "C" and Gunnar reminds me of Gunner Nelson of Nelson , those long haired blond boys who are the son of Rick Nelson and had an album out I think in the 80's. They are good looking and seem like nice guys, but it's just who I think of!

We have our 2nd on the way (due in 5 weeks) and we don't know what we are having. We have a girl name but I'm having trouble with boy's names. I was leaning toward Wyatt but from some of the posts here it looks like it is pretty popular right now... may have to move on to something else. Our first is Evan. I feel pretty confident that this is a girl but I want a boy name ready just in case! I knew my first was a boy the minute I knew I was pregnant. I hope we come up with a name we love!

  • #34
I love names that are not too common but not too different either. My stepson is Austin Tyler (there were 4 Austin's on his soccer team last year), my daughters are Miranda Leigh and Vanessa Marie and my youngest son is Garrett Ashten. Miranda is the only one in her school building right now and Vanessa is only one of 2 in her school so I'm happy with that. Not sure what will happen with Garrett yet though.

namesI have a Cooper and Katie. Have had lots of comments on the name Cooper. It was DH Great Grandpa's middle name - so we switched the first and middle - Cooper John.

Katie's story isn't as exciting. I LOVE the name Katherine - but everyone told me they would call her Kathy (which I don't overly enjoy that name) - so we changed it to Katelynn (which we didn't realize HOW popular it was) Taylor.

We thought we would name (or at least nickname) our boy Gunner - but because of our last name Grant - people laughed that it sounded like a 'Porn Name'!! (our friends came up with the name when they were out partying one night - so maybe it is a bad association - LOL).

I like your names Darcy - it was hard to vote! :) But then again, I like different names too (it is DH that doesn't) - so we had to compromise.

I can't believe the number of people who CAN'T decide TOGETHER - so if it is a boy - the DH gets to name him and if it is a girl - then the mom gets to name her - I LOVED that we were able to decide together (although it took until AFTER the babies were born before we decided - LOL).

  • #39
Darcy...I voted again. The first few names it showed votes already, and it wouldn't let me vote for them. Only the last two would let me vote. I like the name Hayden, but in combonation with Taylan as the middle name, it's pretty hard to say, so that's why I voted against it. I REALLY love Holden!

I also love the fact that you are using Taylan as the middle name...what a way to honor your other baby. God bless!

My sisters friend has twins, and one of them is named Gunner. I had never heard of it before. We call him gunny as a nickname. I love how unique it is. His brother's name is Baron, so they're both uncommon names.

LOL - My oldest DD is an Emily too - she is almost 19 now - but graduated HS class of 564 kids and was the only Emily - # 2 DD is Lauren - tons of them (but loved the name and named her the day # 1 was born - knew I would have more and wanted a sister for #1) # 3 is Brendan (again named day of #2 birth) # 4 is Jaclyn and# 5 is Justin (again very popular) All have middle names named after someone -

IF I ever had another I loved the name Courtney for a girl and Dylan for a boy - BUT that aint happenin'!!

My DD is Haleigh (you don't see the l-e-i-g-h spelling very often) and if she was a boy we were trying to decide between the name Austin and Tyler. I just thought that was funny to see all of the similarities in your post.

  • #44
My DD (almost 4) is Emily Paige. We picked Nolan Pierce if she had been a boy. I like unusual names as well but my DH is more traditional. My DS (from my 1st marriage) is Royce Miken.

  • #45
My husband and I couldn't decide on a name for our second DD. One day I was talking about my day and my friend "Brea" (which is short for Gabriella). My husband LOVED it! I loved it too so her name ended up being Brea. I have never met anyone named that. Her sister's name is Zoe. I like unusual names too! Although I voted for the more traditional name.

  • #46
Well I can't say that my kids names are all that unusual - I have a Zachary Paul - call him Zach, Noah John and Madolyn Grace (thought we would call her Maddie - but never do - she loves her full name and so do I) - my last name is Miller so I couldn't go with too common of a name. I love the spelling of my daughter's name because I am Gina Lynn, my mom is Marcia Lynn, my grandma is Evelyn, I have a cousin named Carolyn and an aunt named Marilyn - so you might see the pattern. Although I will never find anything with that spelling written on it (which is okay with me!) - Good luck with naming your son - pick a name you love to say cause you obviously will be saying it the most!

After Zoe, if we would have had a boy, his name was going to be Zachary. We love that name.

I have a Carson, a Spencer, and my newest (10 days old!) is Parker. I thought it was kind of unusual but now I see like a hundred of you all either have or know Parkers. =) I guess it won't be so unusual after all. I can imagine in 2013 when Parker starts kindergarten there will be five other Parkers in his class.... too funny....=) I voted. I don't like Karson with a "K", but I almost named this new baby Mason, so I like that one, too.=) Jen

VOTED on your name!

As a teacher, I have seen many names and wanted to come up with different names for my own children. (No one else has gone to school with any of my children with the same name.)
Son #1- Spencer Neal
Daughter #1- Nichole Landrie
Daughter #2- Landrie Allie

Our son if a girl, was going to be Nichole. We kept the name when we had our daughter. Came up with the middle name from the movie Con Air. Liked the name so gave our second daughter the name as her first.

I voted. I personally like Carson with a "c". We have a Jacob Carson:)
