if you are going to / have invested in the forged cutlery, the honing tool is a must-have. You are supposed to sharpen your FC after every few (2-3) uses.
There is a great Product Knowledge Video on CC about the Honing Tool.

A honing tool, often referred to as a honing steel, is a kitchen tool used to realign the edge of a knife blade. It works by removing small amounts of metal from the blade, which helps maintain its sharpness. Regular use of a honing tool can keep knives performing well between professional sharpenings.
If you use knives frequently, a honing tool is a valuable addition to your kitchen. It helps maintain the sharpness of your knives, making food preparation easier and safer. While not strictly necessary, it can extend the life of your knives and improve your cooking experience.
It is recommended to hone your knives before each use, especially if you use them regularly. This helps ensure that the blade is aligned and sharp, allowing for better cutting performance. However, the frequency can depend on how often you use your knives and the type of cutting tasks you perform.
No, a honing tool cannot replace professional knife sharpening. While honing helps maintain the edge of a knife, it does not remove material from the blade like sharpening does. Over time, knives will still need to be professionally sharpened to restore their edge and overall performance.
When purchasing a honing tool, consider the material (steel or ceramic), length (typically 10 to 12 inches), and grip comfort. A good honing tool should feel balanced in your hand and have a non-slip handle for safety. Additionally, ensure it is compatible with the type of knives you own.
