For safety and convenience reasons, I prefer to use my debit card most of the time.

The bank I mostly use for savings and PC stuff has "National" in its name (National City" but I am pretty sure it's hard to find one of their ATM's handy. Ditto for Chase, which I use to pay my bills.

This may have been addressed before, but out of the expenses at conference, how many have to be paid with cash and how many can use my debit card. In other words, do I have to pay to take the shuttle bus?

I'm just wondering how much CASH to bring and how many things I can just use my debit card for ...

Mainly, you'll need cash for cabs & tips. I would say that most everything else can be debit. Except if you're planning to get a hot dog from a corner vendor. Even then, they may accept debit! I know that some cabbies do, too!

As noted, the only cash you'll need will be for tips and cab fare. The shuttles to/from Mc Cormick Place and the conference hotels are provided by PC. :)

I took cash last year but alot of places will run a debit card as a cc if it had the ViSA/MC/etc symbol on it instead of having to find an ATM every time you want to pay for something.

There are also drug/convenience stores near the hotels. You could buy a snack tehre and get cash back if you need it.

I would think $30-50 would be plenty to cover cabs and tips - and is probably more than you'd need. We always share cab rides and I think last year we each spent at most $10 for cabs - and we did not stay at the same hotel that our dinner was at so that was an extra trip...

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of using cash for conference expenses?

Using cash for conference expenses can help you stick to a budget, as it limits your spending to the physical amount you have on hand. It also eliminates the risk of overspending that can occur with debit or credit cards. Additionally, cash transactions can be quicker and more straightforward, especially for small purchases.

What are the benefits of using a debit card for conference expenses?

A debit card offers convenience and security, allowing you to make purchases without carrying large amounts of cash. It can also help you track your spending more easily through bank statements. Many debit cards come with rewards or cashback options, which can be beneficial for frequent purchases during the conference.

Are there any risks associated with using cash at a conference?

Yes, carrying cash can pose risks such as loss or theft, which can leave you without funds for the duration of the conference. Additionally, some vendors may not accept cash, limiting your purchasing options. It's also harder to keep track of your expenses when using cash, which can lead to overspending.

What potential issues might arise from using a debit card for expenses?

Using a debit card can lead to overspending if you're not careful, as it’s easy to lose track of your balance. Additionally, if your card is lost or stolen, it may take time to resolve the issue and access your funds. Some vendors may also impose fees for card transactions, which can add to your overall expenses.

How can I decide between cash and debit card for my conference expenses?

Consider your personal spending habits and comfort level with each payment method. If you prefer to stick to a strict budget, cash may be the better option. However, if you value convenience and tracking, a debit card might be more suitable. Assess the conference environment, such as the availability of ATMs and vendor payment preferences, to make an informed decision.
