In the UK, individuals must submit a show every two months to maintain active status, which poses challenges for those taking maternity leave. One participant shared their experience of successfully managing their business during maternity leave by scheduling shows in advance and utilizing catalog shows to generate income. They achieved significant earnings of over $3000 in April and continued to earn $1000+ in May and $2000+ in June. The discussion emphasizes proactive planning and leveraging support from friends and family to sustain business activity during maternity leave.
PREREQUISITESThis discussion is beneficial for expectant mothers who are business owners, entrepreneurs navigating maternity leave, and anyone interested in maintaining business activity while managing family responsibilities.
In the UK, employees are entitled to up to 52 weeks of maternity leave. This is divided into 26 weeks of ordinary maternity leave and 26 weeks of additional maternity leave. Employees must take at least 2 weeks of leave after the baby is born, or 4 weeks if they work in a factory.
Eligible employees can receive Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) for up to 39 weeks. For the first 6 weeks, SMP is paid at 90% of your average weekly earnings, followed by 33 weeks at a flat rate (which is subject to change, so it's best to check the current rate). Some employers may offer enhanced maternity pay, which can be more generous than SMP.
While on maternity leave, you are not allowed to work for your employer. However, you can engage in other work or self-employment, as long as it does not interfere with your maternity leave rights. It's advisable to check your employment contract or speak with your employer about any restrictions.
Staying active during maternity leave can be beneficial for both physical and mental health. The NHS recommends that pregnant individuals engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, swimming, or prenatal yoga, as long as there are no medical complications. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine during pregnancy.
If you have concerns about your maternity leave rights, you should first speak with your employer or HR department for clarification. If you feel your rights are not being respected, you can contact the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) for guidance or seek legal advice to understand your options.
