Effective Strategies to Avoid Spamming in Your E-Newsletter List

In summary, Carolyn recommends putting about 60-70 people in a group and sending them out, and says that she's not had any problems with spamming despite this number. Lisa recommends sending out groups of 7-9 people, and says that this number is less likely to result in spamming issues. Julie recommends using Gmail, as her director has her email address in her

I've heard several different ideas about how many people to put in your groups in your e-newsletter list to avoid spamming. I put 59 in a group, but does anyone know if this is too many, or have other ideas? I'm afraid a lot of my customers never see my letter. Please help!

I recently got a newsletter sent back to me automatically because it thought it was spam. I have about 80 people on my list, but send it through BCC. I'm not sure either.

I put about 60-70 in a group and send those out and don't seem to have problems. Only one time did I get a warning from comcast about spam and I emailed them back and explained it wasn't spam (didn't hear back from them after that).

Mine seem to go through with 60-70 per group and I know people get it because they email me back.

I have eleven groups of 6 or 7 people so I send out my newsletter 11 times. It is worth the time to know that people will get them by sending them out is smaller groups.

I always have a problem when I group people with yahoo addresses. I only have about 30 in my list. I even BCC them. I don't know what is going on with that. Plus I don't get it thrown back to me until 3-4 days later.

I have never had any thrown back, but I am always worried that it gets lost in all the porn and prescription drug spams.

I think it all depends on who your email provider is

I agree, Carolyn. I have Verizon and my lists are 99 or less. I only have had problems with people that have mailboxes that are too full. (At least that I know of....do they tell you when they are sent back because they think you are spamming?)

I got one returned and it said that it had a virus, but it obviously didn't. I think they just send excuses because most full-time scammers don't care if it gets sent back.

I an spamed all the time...I send my emails to everyone who has ever filled in the email address on their door prize slip. At conference we heard that sending 7 - 9 in a group is your best bet to avoid spam...

Doesn't work for me... I am always being routed as spam. AOL bounces ALL my newsletters back to me. NetZero sometimes & Yahoo always routes as SPAM.

I just don't know what to do. I always say at my shows & expo's that if you have a spam filter you MUST add my email address to it as accepted. I guess it goes in one ear and out the other.... I guess if most are getting through, I'm happy. It would be really nice if someone could come up w/ a way for legitimate group emails to flow correctly?!?

I am open to any ideas...

I don't think I've had any problems. The only bounce backs I've had are for incorrect addresses. I'm on Yahoo so I can send 99 at a time in BCC with my email as #100.

COMCAST is AOKI have sent out large lists and small lists of emails and I have not received any back as spam??

I agree with Lisa, the only bounce backs I get are inncorrect address (or they stopped uising the address)...If this happens 3 times, I drop them off my newsletter list.

I like Gillian's idea (as usual) of sending out groups of 7 to 9. Then you ares less likely to have issues.

I used to be able to do this but now I can only send 25 at a time. That would be fine but I have about 300 people that I send my newsletter to! Then Yahoo has a limit of the number you can out for the day, so it takes me days to send my newsletters out to everyone! Are there any Yahoo people out there who can help?

My director has me in her address book and all my e-mails to her are going into her spam file since they changed to FIOS at her house

I sent out my last newsletter with all of my contacts in it BCC, and AOL kicked me off and I had to spend a half hour on the phone with a rep. I said, "I'm sending something to my customers." They said (real smart) "YOU have 500 customers?" I said, "Uh, yeah. I have done 50 cooking shows and a dozen bridal shows with 5-10 people GIVING me their email address WANTING info. I can show you all of the paperwork requesting my newsletter if you'd like. Actually, its probably more than 500." What an as*. He was just nasty. Of course, I'll never do that again.

1. What is spamming and why is it important to avoid in my e-newsletter list?

Spamming refers to the act of sending unsolicited or unwanted emails to a large number of recipients. It is important to avoid spamming in your e-newsletter list because it can damage your brand's reputation, result in legal consequences, and cause your emails to be marked as spam by email providers.

2. What are some effective strategies for avoiding spamming in my e-newsletter list?

Some effective strategies include obtaining explicit consent from subscribers, providing a clear and easy way to unsubscribe, regularly cleaning your email list, and following email marketing regulations such as the CAN-SPAM Act. Additionally, regularly monitoring email engagement metrics and avoiding spam trigger words can also help prevent spamming.

3. Can I add people to my e-newsletter list without their permission?

No, it is not recommended to add people to your e-newsletter list without their explicit consent. This can be considered spamming and can harm your brand's reputation and result in legal consequences. It is best to obtain consent from individuals before adding them to your email list.

4. How often should I clean my e-newsletter list?

It is recommended to clean your e-newsletter list at least once every six months. This will help remove inactive or unengaged subscribers and ensure that your emails are being sent to a high-quality list. However, if you notice a decrease in email engagement or receive a high number of spam complaints, it may be necessary to clean your list more frequently.

5. What should I do if someone unsubscribes from my e-newsletter list?

If someone unsubscribes from your e-newsletter list, it is important to respect their decision and promptly remove them from your list. Avoid adding them back to your list without their explicit consent. Additionally, take note of any feedback they provide and use it to improve your email marketing strategy in the future.
