Discussion Overview

This thread explores the varying perspectives of participants regarding the number of shows they conduct each month as Pampered Chef consultants. The discussion is sparked by a participant's inquiry about the expectation of doing at least 10 shows per month, as suggested by their Executive Director (ED).

Discussion Character

  • Opinion-based
  • Anecdotal
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant, identifying as a consultant, expresses skepticism about the necessity of doing 10 shows a month, emphasizing that it should be based on personal choice and circumstances.
  • Another participant shares their experience of doing 8 shows per month while working towards a more full-time commitment, indicating a desire to increase their show count.
  • Several users mention that the number of shows should align with individual goals and life commitments, with some doing as few as 2-3 shows per month.
  • One participant notes that while the Home Office recommends 8 shows for a balanced business, the actual number should depend on personal preference and lifestyle.
  • Another participant highlights the importance of quality over quantity in shows, suggesting that enthusiasm and effort can lead to better outcomes regardless of the number of shows held.
  • Some participants express that the pressure to meet a specific number of shows can be counterproductive, especially for those treating their business as a hobby or part-time endeavor.
  • One participant mentions that their ED's suggestion of 10 shows may be tied to broader team goals or individual aspirations for income and recruitment.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Views differ significantly among participants regarding the ideal number of shows to conduct each month. There is no clear consensus, as opinions range from advocating for personal choice to acknowledging the potential benefits of a higher show count.

I am just wondering HOW MANY shows do you do during a month? Anyone want to share. (MY ED told us at our Training Meeting we NEED to be doing at least 10!...is that realistic???)

Curious,
Jenna

Well it depends on your life. I am thinking they have no right to tell you how many you should do. It is your business to do how you want to.
I'm sure there are people that can do 10, but not every month on a regular basis is it a necessity.
Importantly do you want to be doing 10 shows a month? It is up to you!

First thing Jenna - I do't think your ED needs to tell you how many shows that you need to be doing.....unless you've asked for coaching from her. Afterall, it's your business, not hers! That being said, I'm working towards turning my part-time biz into more of a full-time biz so I do @ 8 shows per month right now. I'd like to have @ 12 per month.

How many shows do you want to do? How much time do you wan to give to PC? Are you a hobbyist, part-timer or full-timer? Do you do this for fun or are you relying on PC to pay bills or just support your habit?

Well, HO recommens we do 8 for a "balanced business". With that said, you only NEED to be doing as many shows a month as YOU want... not what any ED says. However, if you are planning to promote with PC, then you should set a fairly regular schedule, but the three directors above me only do, on average, about 8 shows a month or so... That is the whole 3-2-1 plan in action.

I agree with Linda!

I do 2-3 depending on my schedule. I really do not have time for more than that without feeling stressed.

The last couple of years, I did about 2 shows a month. But I'm working toward Directorship this year (there, I said it :) ), and have been trying to boost my show schedule accordingly. However, I work full-time and have other commitments (don't we all?), so even 8 shows a month is a stretch for me, let alone 10. My personal goal is a consistent 6-7 per month, with some months higher (esp. sell-a-thon months).

I can see why your ED would want you to have more, though. If she's got a large team, then she probably doesn't have the time to coach people who are hobbyists. Are you in her first line (she's your director - nobody else between you)? Because your access to other coaching should affect how much you get from her, too.

Ahhh Ditto!!! I'm a Director, there's NO way would I tell my team how many shoes they should be doing. What I do say is, "the beauty of this business is, you can work when YOU want to."

I am also a STRONG believer of "lead by example" ~ is she doing 10 shows a month? Then good for her if she is...but if she's not...shame on her. I never ask my team to do something unless I'm right there with them doing it too!

I agree with everyone else, it's what YOU want to do with YOUR business. And what fits in with your life. I work full time outside of PC and I do between 2-6 shows a month depending on how many people book in a particular month. This month I have 5 and 4 already for February. Looking to be pretty busy for a while!

I do 2 shows a month, that is my level. I may change it someday, but that is my goal, my ED knows it and said she is there to support me when I want more.

Doing 8-10 per month is what HO recommends, however, our directors are there to support us at what level we choose. My ED asked my goals, I told her and she fully support me where I am at. That is what they should do. I know an area director (not in my cluster) who has had consultants quit because she is pushy and makes them feel like they should work at her level.

"Need" is one of those words that absolutely rankles me. As for whether 10 shows a month is realistic. Only if it fits your schedule and your goals. (I do PC 'full-time' and find, for me, 10 shows a month is about my max comfort zone. I sometimes do more, but when I do, my business takes over more of my life than I want it to.)

I would love to do that many but getting that many is a dif story. I do 2-3 a month so months more. But I just started in Oct. and like I said I would LOVE to do more but . . . gotta have them to do them!

I say work your business as you want to. 10 shows may work great for your ED but won't work for someone doing PC as a hobby or part-time. With the 3-2-1 strategy they recommend (not require) 2 shows a week which would be more on the measure of 8 shows. As for myself, most I've had so far is 4 in one month. I want to ramp up but it's hard work getting to those yeses sometimes.

Number of Shows...Maybe I'm crazy, but I honestly think it's more important to focus on the QUALITY of the shows we do rather than the QUANTITY. I mean, don't get me wrong, the number is important if you have to reach a certain goal...but in the time that I've been doing this (not long, but enough to see a pattern) I've found that the more effort I put into being excited about my business, about the company and about the products and host benefits, the better I've done, regardless of how many (or how few) parties I have each month.

What context was your ED talking in? Did she mean that to do PC FT you should be doing at least 10 shows? I agree that you should be doing however many you want/are comfortable doing, but maybe she mentioned 10 shows for a reason?

I started out doing 3-4 shows a month...that is what i set for myself. My director has never said that I needed to do x amount of shows. But what she has said is if you want to achieve your goal you should do x amount of shows. It all up to you and what your goals are. Remember PC is a very flexible business and it is YOUR Business! If you have time and want to do 10 shows a month go for it. But if not do as many as you want and achieve your goals not someone elses!

I can manage about 8 shows a month...I'd like to add more, but with everything else that just isn't possible. I'd love more money and more recruits, but I have to be able to handle all that to be successful.

Is she telling you to have 10 shows all the time or just through the winter (I'm thinking cancellations); also, could she be saying this b/c you (or the group) expressed wanting more money (or a certain amount of money) and/or more recruits or TPC by June?

I'm not saying you didn't hear her or understand her clearly, but maybe she thought she explained herself and this reasoning better. I say do what you can handle and do it with 100% effort...that is success.

me too, I would like to do about 8 a mont but right know I`m far away and it stresses me:( . For Jan. I only have one, but I hope that in the future I will be able to reach my goal;)

That's what I'm thinking...the company recommends 2 shows a week to be able to acheive everything they have to offer (promotions, trips and other incentives). 2 shows a week = 8 shows a month. I have always heard that they recommend booking 10 shows a month so that you don't fall short of your goals if 1 or 2 cancel. Of course, that is only if that is your goal.

In my mind, it all depends on YOUR goals. Have as many shows as it takes for YOU to meet the goals YOU have set for yourself.

I would love to have two shows a week. That's 8 shows a month plus a few more. Because December is a bit hard and July is a bit hard (for me) I would like to do 10 a month so I have cushion for the dry times. Right now I'm sporadic. This month I have 8 scheduled. Last month...2. November I had 6, October I had 3, September I had 7, August I had 3. Hope to have 8-10 consistantly.

For the past 6 months - this is what I have done for cooking shows:
June - 7
July - 7
August - 2
September - 5
October - 10
November - 11
December - 6

and in January, I have 9, February, right now I have 7.

My AD told me one time that in order to achieve the goals I had set for myself, I needed to be doing 6-8 shows a month - but that was after she reviewed MY goals - not hers!

The months I was doing 10-11 shows, were very difficult! Like Leggy said, it started to take over my life! I am overbooking January and February, just to off-set those winter weather cancellations, etc.....but my plan is to now stick to an 8 shows a month schedule.

How much do YOU want to be working, and how much is realistic with your other commitments.

I will clarify...When we were at our "back to work" training meeting on sat., we talked all about personal goals (keep in mind MOST of the attendees were NC -- 30-60 days into starting up). Once we found out WHERE the Incentive Trip was - we ALL wanted to earn the trip for two! (OF COURSE!). So, to earn the Trip for Two, we need to do a minimum of 10 per month. Her quote, "Under 10 Shows a month...I consider them a Hobbyist." I saw the look on the other girls faces (especially the NC -- most are struggling to find their first 4 bookings TO GET QUALIFIED!!!!). Now, my ED recruits an average of 150 per year...AND does PC F/T with teenager kids. HER VERSION of a F/T Consultant or a 'hobbyist' upset me because she generalized that everyone was in HER life situation. I have 2 kids...my oldest is JUST 2 year old. I felt....umm....inadequate (I think is the word I want to use). Anyways, one girl was SO overwhelmed (she can't find her 2 show and is in month 2 of her NC Start) she was crying! Do you think I misunderstood my ED, or was she insensitive???

p.s. I JUST got my 1st recruit and am really struggling with what kind of Director I am going to be. I am a caring person who WANTS other to succeed. When I told MY Director that my new recruit didn't know who to ask for her first 4-6 shows, my D told me 'that is her problem to figure out.' So, again, I ask you...am I being overly sensitive? Where is 'the HUGE support system' that PC talks about??? Anyone else experience this??????????

my show schedule...October 6
November 3 + 2 catty
December 3

January 8 + 2 tradeshows (I am excited to do the 'National Booking Blitz' day on the 24th
February 4 confirmed +

If somebody told me I NEED to have 10 shows a month, I'd decide I NEED to be under another director, or out the door!

I strive to have 2 shows a month and with work, that is a struggle. I don't always meet the goal.

You NEED to have $250 in sales every 2 months, or you become "inactive." But you can re-activate just by selling again. That is what I love about this business!

I think it's only $200 in sales every 2 months. :)

You do not have to do 8 shows a month to acheive most of the incentives!!!! I regularly do less than 4 shows a month and get most of the incentives including earning Level 1 my first year in PC.

I guess I'm a little backwards in my thinking. 3-2-1 does not work for me, doesn't even fit into my schedule most days. I do what works for me and am very happy with it. At a special event I earned in my top line cluster, I had another consultant ask me about 3-2-1 and she was shocked that I can do as well as I have been by not doing it. It's my business, I will run it the way I want to.

This is YOUR business, you run it how you want to.

Consistency is more important. Whether you do 2 shows a month or 2 shows a week. Sklay had in right when she talked about the quality of the show. I had only 2 shows in December, but had $1200+ I focused on the quality.

I usually do 8 cooking shows a month, preferably 10. I don't count catalog shows. These are "my icing on the cake". When I started doing a consistent schedule, I saw my sales sore. I've increased by $1000 from the previous month over the last several months. My schedule is consistent. If I have only one show one week, my next week will have 3, which balances out and gives my 8 a month.

i'm lucky if i do 4 shows a year!!! ;) so hats off to you all who do much more!

I do about 8-9 a month, I'd like to do 10-12! Then I'd be stylin! :balloon: That's one of my 2008 goals!
