I TOTALLY AGREE and would get a 2nd opinion! I have worked in the field of early intervention specifically for children with autism for the past 7 years, and early intervention is the key!

Children that have a diagnosis of autim are my heart! And I have made it my personal goal to reach out to families affected by autism to help educate and support as much as I can! Please let me know how I can be of help! Feel free to email me privately!

Thanks Crystal! I will be calling first thing Monday morning to set up his speech and occupational therapy evaluations. I really don't know what to expect at this point... I'm not sure how the programs through the school system work or if they're effective. Our insurance will cover an ABA therapist (not even sure if that's what we'll need) - but there's not one in our network within at least 100 miles.

Ashlee,Once again I've referred your situation to my sister :) The last 5 years she has devoted her life to researching EVERYTHING she can concerning autism. She is the go-to person in her area when it comes to knowing her stuff. She FIGHTS daily for her boys in a world that doesn't understand or doesn't care to understand. She has even been invited to the governor's conference (FL) for children with disabilities. She is my hero :) I told her what your doctor said and here is her response.... I have cut and pasted it so that I don't mess it up! she needs to see a neurodevelopmental pediatrician. they will screen for a diagnosis if relevant. oh, and without the label her child won't get services. it's a sad, sad cycle. as you know! :)

oh, and tell her to read the tacanow.com website (tacanow: talk about curing autism now) ... and autismspeaks.com for early warning signs. autism speaks has video clips of what typical behavior looks like and how autistic behavior is different. it's not always the behavior, but the "frequency and duration" of the behavior.

hope that helps.

Thought I'd share a funny story with you :) In post #26 I talked about how my sister uses over-correction to help her boys. I was in Florida with her this weekend and today I was trying to take pictures of our kids together. Sam, the 4 yr old, wanted nothing to do with it. He started saying "I no smile!" and then spit on the floor.

Lori put him in time out and then said, "You get to see over correction in action." She got a container of Lysol wipes and then went to get Sam. I sat down at the kitchen table to watch. She walked him over to where he spit, said "Spitting is bad", and gave him a wipe...guiding him to wipe it up. Then she told him to throw it away. As he walked by me he GLARED at me and said, "I no smile!!" It was all I could to not to laugh!

Then he walked back to her, she repeated the process...he repeated the process of glaring at me. Three times he glared at me and said "I no smile!" but the 4th time he bent down and wiped the floor and said, "Spitting is bad". Threw the wipe away without saying anything else. Fifth time...it was amazing...his grumpy attitude was gone and he said "Spitting is bad" so matter of fact, like "okay..I get it".

It was really interesting to watch. Those of you still dealing with behavior issues....give this a try. It sounds a bit bizarre but it's working. Wonder if it would work with a 17 yr that rolls her eyes

"Rolling your eyes is BAD!!" :D

Basically, the guy hasn't said more than a sentence in about two decades, but is an artist. He was just hired to do a major project for New York. I guess he sees the entire paintings in the head then creates them They are quite complex and interesting.

Quotes from the mom:
"Don't assume anything is over. It doesn't matter if they are 5 or 12 or 15. You won't get what you wanted but you may get something better than you dreamed."

And didn't it just bring tears to your eyes to hear him talking about his art? His Mom is so proud of him - I am so happy for them!

Yes, he was able to communicate about his art and a level beyond everything else.

I would think so - it is an incredible story Diane, and from what I understand - it was a followup to a story done earlier in the year. Beautiful story of a mother's determination to give her son a "real" life - and of a son's triumph and success when others were ready to resign him to just an existence, not a life.
