Ok, so I have had a frustrating week of crazy excuses, host cancelling like crazy, and one lady changing her date over and over for silly reasons, but this one takes the icing on the cake. I had a lady cancel because she would have to claim her free product on her TAXES!! yes that's right and nothing I could say or do would change her mind, she actually said she couldn't believe that all host don't claim it because they should. Anyway I kept talking to her and I think it was just an excuse but I think it is the most original I have heard in a long time.;)

Claim it as what? A business expense?

I really don't understand this ...

Maybe the right word isn't claim, but she meant she declares it as income?

As income - like lottery or casino winnings are supposed to be claimed, too.Geez! That's definitely an original one!

wow....

Roflmao!!!!!!

Even with the show over there:

<----------------

I have never seen a host get enough to merit a 1099 ... but if that were the case I'd encourage her to sign up and turn it into a business expense!

Yep, she better start refusing ALL gifts now...LOL..."Thanks, but sorry I can't accept your gift because I don't want to have to claim it as income!"

But truely, it's not a gift...host rewards...they have to pay for the groceries to receive rewards.

But truly, it's not a gift...host rewards...they have to pay for the groceries to receive rewards.

And they have to "work" to get their show sales up. They EARN what they get!

I would almost want to send her a SB with a note telling her that she had the most imaginative excuse ever, so you wanted to give her a surprise! (How do you "claim" a $1 cookbook? lol)

Now THAT is awesome!! That would be a great comeback if there's a way to make it sound inquisitive and not snotty. (Coming from me it would probaby sounds too snotty!)

Wow, well how big of a party was she planning to have??!!! That has got to be the most ridiculous excuse I've ever heard.:D

That's one for the record books.

hmm
B-day gifts,
Christmas,
friend buying dinner... OH My!!!

WOW! Now I will have to use my degree in accounting to figure that out. May take me a while. Hmmmm? That is a great excuse (not).

So does she not have any home parties? She is a nut! Bless and release as they say here! LOL!

A personal gift can be up to $10,000 in one year I believe before you have to claim it. As far as extra income $600 is the least before you get a 1099. I agree that she is a little off there. Does she claim her buy one get one free items? Very original excuse.

That is awesome! I'm gonna start using that myself when I go to other DS shows and they ask me to host!

I'm gonna say "I claim enough for taxes with my own business, I don't need to start getting free stuff from other companies to keep track of claiming that too!"...LOL LOL LOL

OMGoodness! That is the funniest, most bizarre excuse ever. Does she really believe it or is it a way out?

No, I really think this was just an excuse, she also mentioned that she gave away her drapes and the new ones won't be in for six weeks. I said I am sure her friends won't mind, and she said she could never have anyone over with out her drapes hung. It was just the tax thing that got to me. I explained that it was a host reward and the company pays taxes and the consultants pay taxes. I couldn't believe she said that my other hosts should pay taxes though! Oh well.

If you read through the IRS code the free products earned at an in home party are supposed to be claimed on your taxes. I don't know of anyone who has ever done this nor have I heard of the IRS charging anyone for it.
