 We have a "Dim Sum" show tomorrow and cannot find jalepeno jelly anywhere (we live on Guam). Does anyone have an idea for a substitute?

Thanks!!!

well, hum... here the jalepeno jelly is in the jelly section, which throws some people off. The baked pot stickers are so good that they can basically stand on their own. You could just serve them with some soy sauce.

Can you get the Thai Chili sauce - the sweet one (usually comes in a bottle and it's sort of reddish in color)? That should be good with them.

The Sweet Chili Sauce is made by a company called Mae Ploy...or that is the Thai name of the sauce...I'm not sure. Anyhoo, I've used bottled sweet and sour sauce in a pinch. However, when I use the Mae Ploy or s&s, I don't make the dipping sauce...they are the dipping sauce!

My husband, a chef, suggests the following:Get Apple, Peach or Orange Marmalade -- or Apple or Peach Jelly. Then, stir in chopped jalapenos (according to how hot you want it). Add to your recipe as normally suggested.Trish

Thanks everyone for your help!

Going to try the orange marmalade and see how it goes.
Also we will have some sweet & sour just in case!

You guys are great!

My favorite is the potstickers without any sauce. I also like them dipped in mustard. Good luck kitchencop!

The test kitchens suggested apricot jam with minced jalapenos.

I use Grape. Many people don't like the spice anyway.

just don't ever use Habernero (sp?) pepper jelly! can you say "FIRE"

I did not even think about using a mustard sauce!!! I'll have to tell my DH that one (he is the one that does all the demos...etc...the REAL PC Guru!).

Also, everyone LOVED the potstickers (just used the sweet/sour sauce) -- but honestly I cannot wait to make them at home for the family (OK, my DH does that too)...and try all the yummy sauces suggested by you all.

You are all amazing!

Thanks!!!

Any Asian Dipping Sauce would be good. You can always "kick" it up with some chili flakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some good substitutes for jalapeño jelly in dim sum dishes?

Some great substitutes for jalapeño jelly include sweet chili sauce, mango chutney, or a homemade blend of honey and diced jalapeños. Each of these options will provide a sweet and spicy flavor that complements dim sum well.

Can I use regular jelly or jam instead of jalapeño jelly?

Yes, you can use regular jelly or jam, but it’s best to choose a flavor that pairs well with savory dishes, such as apricot or peach. To add heat, consider mixing in some finely chopped fresh jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.

How can I make my own jalapeño jelly substitute at home?

You can make a simple jalapeño jelly substitute by combining equal parts of sugar and vinegar with finely chopped jalapeños. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool. This will give you a sweet and spicy sauce that mimics jalapeño jelly.

Are there any store-bought alternatives to jalapeño jelly that I can use?

Yes, many grocery stores offer alternatives like pepper jelly, which often comes in various flavors and heat levels. Look for brands that specifically mention a sweet and spicy profile to find the best match for your dim sum.

What dishes can I enhance with jalapeño jelly substitutes during a dim sum show?

Jalapeño jelly substitutes can enhance a variety of dim sum dishes, including dumplings, spring rolls, and steamed buns. They can also be used as a dipping sauce for fried items or drizzled over savory pastries for an extra kick.
