Can someone tell me how well these hold the glasses? It doesn't apperar to have a lip around the outer edge, so I am wondering if the glasses are really secure.

They don't secure the glass, just give you a place to set it. You can balance the plate and leave a couple of fingers on the glass. Still easier than with no spot on the plate.
 
It's easy to cup your fingers on the bottom ridge when holding the glass and plate. Perfect for pot lucks or picnics.
 
Like they said, they are more for CARRYING the glass with fingers wrapped around it, not quite holding it in place
