I'm looking for a dessert recipe to demo for a group of 20+, that will appeal to both male and female guests. My hostess would like to use seasonal fruit, loves to bake, and all the men are cooks who are very interested in the knives. I am not really into sweets and do not have very much experience with sweet recipes. In my family, the men only like cookies and brownies, not really into "fancy" desserts. I welcome suggestions and hints.Thanks. How about the Summer Berry Shortcakes? Is that a recipe that would appeal to both sexes? That uses a lot of tools and fits the bill. Any other ideas?

A trifle would be good! They are easy to make, taste great and look good too.

You can do something berry, something chocolate or perhaps a mixture of both. You could make two (even if you only have one trifle bowl you can make one ahead in something else).

It always looks impressive and is easy!

Do you think the guys would be interested a trifle?

My husband loves trifles. There are always several when we have gatherings at church and the guys seem to love them just as much as the women.

My DH and DS LOVE the Chocolate Peanut Butter Trifle, and the Red, White & Blueberry Trifle too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients do I need for the Summer Berry Shortcakes?

To make Summer Berry Shortcakes for a large group, you will need fresh berries (such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries), sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, flour, baking powder, salt, butter, and milk. You can also add mint for garnish if desired.

How do I prepare the shortcakes for this dessert?

To prepare the shortcakes, start by preheating your oven. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk and mix until just combined. Shape the dough into rounds and bake until golden brown. Allow them to cool before assembling.

Can I make the shortcakes ahead of time?

Yes, you can make the shortcakes ahead of time! Bake them a day in advance and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. When you're ready to serve, you can reheat them slightly in the oven for a few minutes to refresh their texture.

What is the best way to assemble the Summer Berry Shortcakes?

To assemble the shortcakes, slice each shortcake in half horizontally. Layer fresh berries mixed with a bit of sugar on the bottom half, then add a generous dollop of whipped cream. Place the top half of the shortcake on top and add more berries and whipped cream if desired. Serve immediately for the best texture.

Can I customize the berry mixture for the shortcakes?

Absolutely! You can customize the berry mixture based on your preferences or seasonal availability. Feel free to mix different types of berries or even add other fruits like peaches or cherries. Just make sure to adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of the fruits you choose.
