We have been 'hosting' a young man for the past 2 weeks. He has called the homeless shelter a few times, but they tell him to keep trying back until there's an opening. He has no job, and there are precious few openings in our small town. Since he doesn't have a car, it's even more difficult, because he can't go to neighboring towns to search for work.

Today my daughter confided to my husband that Destin has been pushing our son (19) to go with him to buy drugs, even when our son insists he's not interested. Sam, our son, has already had legal troubles because of drugs, and only by the extreme mercy of God is he not in jail right now. Destin also has had legal issues, and admits if he gets in trouble again he'll go to "the big house, not just the little town jail."

This evening, while both of our children were out with friends, my husband and I sat down with Destin and told him he has to leave. He can stay the night, but he has to leave tomorrow. We explained we can't have drug dealing at our house, without telling him what our daughter said, because CPS could come in and take her away, claiming we're unfit parents for allowing the drug use (by the way, we are and always have been adamantly against drug use - Sam's using it was in complete rebellion to the way he was raised).

I honestly don't think God wants us to just kick Destin out on the street. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it - which means my spirit is not at peace with the idea. However, I know our daughter isn't lying (Destin, of course, denied everything). Destin has, by his account, had a hard life, not exactly filled with alot of love for him. I think offering him a stable home and trust is better for him in the long run, but, as my husband says, we can't risk sacrificing everything for this boy, whom, by the way, we barely know.

My husband told Destin to pray, but Destin says it doesn't do him any good. When he used to pray years ago, things got worse instead of better, and they only improved, slightly, when he started doing things on his own. How heartbreaking is that?!

Anyway, I talked to my husband, and he agreed to allow Destin until Friday to find a place. Please pray that there is a miracle, either that Destin does find both a good and stable home, as well as a job, or something happens in our home to make everyone want him to stay.

God bless you for giving him a home for the past 2 weeks. I think you are making the right decision. Everyone deserves to have a roof over his/her head, but your family comes first. If this young man is endangering your family, he cannot stay with you.

I'll pray that he finds a roof and some direction.

praying for all of you!

Oh Sarah, I'm so sorry you're in this spot. Will pray that he finds a new place and job, and also that God give you peace with your decision. Your family is important, and your son is working so hard to do well....it's smart to remove unneeded temptation and stress.

I would like to offer you and your family a complimentary meal as a way to show my support and care for your family. It is clear that you have a big heart and want to help Destin, but it is also important to prioritize the safety and well-being of your own family. I understand that you do not want to just kick him out on the street, and I commend you for giving him until Friday to find a place to stay. In the meantime, please know that there are resources available for homeless individuals, such as shelters and job placement programs. Perhaps you can help connect Destin with these resources to give him a better chance at finding a stable home and job.I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I truly hope that everything works out for the best, whether it is Destin finding a stable home and job, or something happening in your home that makes everyone want him to stay.
