One Essential Tip for New Consultants: Insights from Experienced Professionals

In summary, Debbie's advice is to relax, have fun, and enjoy the process. KG shared a funny anecdote of when he was in Niagara Falls and didn't know how to tip a valet. He ended up not staying at the hotel because of the high price for parking and valet service. Everyone else has shared great advice for new consultants.

So I was hoping to get a lot of different people's opinions on this. I figure, maybe I can learn something from this as a new consultant, and I'm sure any new consultants that come along would find this helpful too.

So here's my idea. For all you veterans out there:

If you had one tip to give any new consultant, about ANYTHING, what would that be?

Discuss :D

I usually tip 15-20% if the waiter/waitress is really good.I never have figured out what to tip a cabbie or doorman.

This might help KG! LOL

Build a team of your own as soon as possible! Just ask people if they've ever thought about doing PC.

Not a veteranI do not consider myself a veteran by any means! It will be 3 years next month that I have been selling PC. I do this as a hobby but still love it!!

One tip that I would pass on to you is this:

Relax and have fun at your shows! People aren't as critical as we think! Especially if they know you are new at this!

Back on subject (lol TKG! ):

My tip is enjoy what you're doing and let it show. Fun is contageous. If you are having fun people will want to party with you (and hopefully work with you too!).

Host coach, Host coach, Host coach :)

Start slow and enjoy the parties and everything else will follow.Have fun-fun.

So as to derail my own post :p I had to share this anecdote.

While on vacation this past summer in Niagara Falls with my better half, we stayed at a hotel with valet service, which we had NO idea about prior our arrival. I felt so awkward, because I had never had to tip a valet before, I had no idea what to tip them, and they all seemed to walk away too quickly, so I felt like maybe they didn't accept tips... it was wild! Long story short... I wont stay at that hotel again because they charge way too much money for parking and valet service that you can't refuse if you want your car parked at the hotel lol. LUCKILY we didn't really have to drive anywhere, we were in walking distance of everything, including the casino $$.

Anyone, back on topic, some good tips to follow so far thanks folks :D

Definitely start recruiting from the beginning. I have a feeling if I would have tried to recruit from the start I would be a director now. Now, I just have to work a little harder at directorship.

See your host as your business partner - when you have a good show, she gets great benefits! and HOST COACH YOUR BOOTIE OFF!

Thread hijacking is a normal way of life around here. In fact, it's always better to hijack your own thread before anyone else can, but if you don't, we'll (obviously) take care of that for you.

Same advice as Deb and Beth!;)

In addition to the great tips you've already gotten, I'll add this:As you get ready for your first show (and any time you add something new to your show), practice out loud. Since you're hearing it as you speak it, it plants it in a different place in your brain. It helps to keep your show smooth and makes it much easier to remember what you plan to say.

I tend to agree with what's been said:

1. Recruit NOW...don't feel like you need to know what YOU are doing before someone else can sign up under you...you can both learn at the same time! Also, I didn't recruit cuz directorship wasn't my goal (then...it is now!) but I should have looked at it like if they offer directorship to me and I don't want it, I can turn it down!

2. Rae is sooooooo right! Practice OUT LOUD it makes an ENORMOUS difference!!

3. I'll add something not already specifically mentioned: If you help enough people get what THEY want...you will automatically get what YOU want! (As in, help the host get the most free things and the most fun out of her show...help your recruit leads fulfill THIER dreams!) Hope that makes sense! It is NOT about you....it's always about them! If you keep it about them, your dreams and goals will come true alongside of theirs!

Don't let yourself get down because if you "work the plan" the plan will work for you. Sometimes things don't go the way you want, but many times things go way better than you expected. Your hard work will pay off. Don't give up or give in to negativity.

If I had two tips (I've already given one), I'd add to be sure you know why you do PC.We all go through slumps. We all have those days (week, months), when we loathe the idea of making one more call or lugging our stuff out for another party. At those times, you'll want to examine your "why." Most of the time you'll realize that your "why" is still important enough to you to keep at it. Eventually, you'll come back around to enjoying what you do.If you know that these times will come, and you're prepared in advance, they are easier to deal with.

That recruiting tip is a biggie. Don't be afraid to start building your team right away. You may not know the in's and out's, but your director does, and will hopefully work with you. (its your director who should be training these new people you bring on.)

Also, HUGE in my book... DO NOT DISCRIMINATE! I am a tattooed biker when I started this biz (and still am! ). (Thankfully it was winter and my tats were not showing all over the place) I asked my recruiter once, had it been summer time with my skin hanging out all over, if she would have still asked me and she said she didnt know. Hmmm... What a loss that would have been for her. I am her top performing director. You NEVER know who your next consultant will be. EVERYONE has the potential to be a great consultant, but they wont be if YOU DONT ASK!

Customer Care call. After your show when they have received their products call to see that everything is okay and let them know if they need anything in the future to call you. It's a great way remind them that you are their consultant that cares.

Everyone loves the customer care call. Especially when you say something like.... I was making muffins today and remembered you got the muffin stone. What have you made? Oh man that sounds good can I have the recipe? I made .............. do you want my recipe? Also the 10 min pork loin recipe is so easy..... sold a few deep bakers and everyone wants the pork at their show. I do it with the host before everone gets there and demo something else. No one is ever hungry after a show. And let people know if they put the email address on the order form and write what recipe they want you will email the recipe. Great way to get ALL THE INFO on clients and new friends.

You guys have some great tips and ideas! Much appreciated!

And Kristin, I couldn't agree with you more on discrimination. I'm a good example of that, I have a bike myself and few ink spots, and I was still told I would make a great consultant, so you can't judge a book ;)
