Is anyone else really missing spinach? What other leafy things are you putting in your salads? I am not too knowledgable on lettuce and I have been eating romaine since this whole spinach thing happened and I am getting sick of it. I tried arugula, but its just too bitter for me. Does anyone have any leafy suggestions?

We can buy spinach here but just not in the bags. Is the bunches off the shelves there as well?

I miss it too :( I am paranoid about lettuce now too. ugh.

Just eat more cheesecake.

It's healthier.

EXCELLENT idea! I am a huge cheesecake fan, too! :)

Plan to grow your own next year! That won't help now, but maybe the frozen stuff will do in the meantime? Check out the bagged lettuce mixes. They were NOT affected by the whole ecoli thing.

I love the letterman joke about spinach- there's never been a better time to pick a fight with Popeye!!

For my show the other night, we used a bagged lettuce blend; I think it was a European blend. Everyone loved the salad. And I let them know that the recipe originally calls for spinach, so once the recall is over they can make it with that!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some leafy alternatives to spinach for salads?

Some great leafy alternatives to spinach include kale, arugula, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, and baby greens. Each of these options offers a unique flavor and texture that can enhance your salad.

How can I prepare kale for a salad if I want to substitute spinach?

Kale can be tough, so it's best to massage it to soften the leaves. Remove the stems, chop the leaves into bite-sized pieces, and then drizzle with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Massage the leaves for a couple of minutes until they become tender and ready for your salad.

Are there any nutritional differences between spinach and its alternatives?

Yes, there are nutritional differences. Spinach is rich in iron and vitamins A and K, while kale is higher in vitamin C and calcium. Arugula has a peppery flavor and is low in calories, making it a great option for those watching their intake. Each leafy green has its own unique health benefits.

Can I mix different leafy greens in my salad?

Absolutely! Mixing different leafy greens can add variety in flavor and texture to your salad. Combining spinach, arugula, and romaine, for example, can create a delicious and visually appealing dish.

What dressings pair well with leafy greens other than spinach?

Dressings that pair well with leafy greens include vinaigrettes made with balsamic, lemon, or apple cider vinegar. Creamy dressings like ranch or Caesar also complement heartier greens like kale and romaine. Experiment with different dressings to find your favorite combination!
