SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the decision to carpet an entire ranch home with a single type of berber carpet featuring cream and flecked colors. Participants agree that using the same carpet throughout minimizes color shock and can be cost-effective. It is recommended to select wall colors first, ensuring they coordinate with the chosen carpet, which should be neutral to accommodate various color schemes. The consensus emphasizes the importance of selecting timeless and versatile flooring to allow for future updates in wall colors without needing to replace the carpet.

We are in the process of purchasing my parent's home and we are tearing out and replacing all of the carpet. It is a ranch home, and we will be carpeting the living room, hallway, and into 3 bedrooms. My question is this: I am considering carpeting EVERYTHING in the same carpet. Probably a berber with different colors flecked throughout a cream color carpet. This way, we can paint our rooms different colors (pick out a color that is in the carpet) but we then have no color shock as you go from hallway into the bedrooms. Does this sound like it would look OK? My SIL has a new home and they carpeted everything with beige plush carpet and I really like it.

Thanks for your opinions,

I would definitely carpet throughout with the same carpet. Most likely it would be cheaper, and like you said it would also provide less color shock. BUT, I wouldn't pick wall colors based on the carpet color, I would pick the carpet after I chose my wall colors. Come up with a color scheme for each room that coordinates with all the other rooms and then go to flooring dept @ Lowe's or Home Depot with your paint chips and start comparing carpets with your chosen color scheme. You'll want to pick some thing that is neutral enough to go with all your colors. That's the reason most new houses are carpeted like your sister's house. The beige will coordinate with nearly all color schemes.

In our old house, we chose the kitchen colors and then coordinated the rest of the house around them. Our kitchen had a Tuscan feel, so we painted the walls a golden color called Brown Mustard. The cabinets were a olive color called Tarragon, and the floors were terracotta. The living room & hall were a lighter shade of Tarragon called River Reed and the Master Bedroom was a light golden color that complimented the River Reed. While the Master Bath was a brownish burgandy. It was a returned mistint paint that I got @ Lowe's for $3, so it didn't have a name! We had a creamy gray berber as well throughout the house, that looked OK, but I didn't really care for it all that much. I painted the kid's rooms to suit their personalities and interests. My son is REALLY into sports and we did his bedroom in a very light blue and then put up a baseball stadium mural on one wall. While our daughter's room was made to look like a meadow in the 100 acre. The bottom half of the wall was painted a Spring Lawn green with the edge painted to look like rolling hills. The sky was painted a Periwinkle and the ceiling was Tea Rose yellow(another $3 mistint). All these colors were pulled from the her Pooh Bear bedding which I made myself.

Just my 2 cents. I'd just pick something that will weather trends nicely and not look dated in a few years. Picking something neutral will allow you to update your paint colors without having to change the carpet too!

I would do the carpet all the same also when we bought our house the people before us laid carpet in the livingroom and up the stairs then the realator told them to let the new buyers decide, I so wish that we could have the same carpet throught the house.
