My host (and best friend) wants to know if the Forged Cutlery is really that much better than the self honing. She has several self honing and liks the combo of Forged Cutley but since some will be duplicates she is wondering if its worth it to change.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I HATE the Knives the Honing Cases and couldn't live without my Forged Cutlery. There is a great comparison chart on CC that shows the differences. Just hold one of each in your hand and you will feel the difference--the handles, the weight.

can you let her try out a piece for awhile and see for herself?

It really depends on what you're looking for in a knife. I like one with a bit of weight behind it, so the Forged Cutlery is my choice.

If she truely wants a great quality, life time knife, the forged cutlery is the way to go. I never use anything else in my kitchen.

I like to make the investment once and enjoy the great quality. I LOVE the decision to get the forged cutlery. It's nice to have a whole set as well.

Question along those lines, Do you take a knife in a honing case with you for comparison?

I take one with me. I like them to see the difference. Plus it's great for people who say how much the loved the knives w/ sharpening cases, then I can show them this (cause I know they are at that budget level) and explain the benefit of honing. I also promote them as being great travel knives or knives for the camper, because of the special case and locking mechanism.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between the Forged Cutlery Collection and Self-Honing Knives?

The main differences lie in their construction and maintenance. The Forged Cutlery Collection is made from high-carbon stainless steel, providing durability and a sharp edge that can be honed manually. Self-Honing Knives, on the other hand, feature a built-in honing mechanism that automatically sharpens the blade with each use, making them more convenient for those who prefer low-maintenance options.

Which collection offers better durability?

The Forged Cutlery Collection typically offers better durability due to its solid, forged construction. This process creates a stronger blade that can withstand more wear and tear compared to the stamped blades often found in Self-Honing Knives. However, the longevity of either option also depends on proper care and maintenance.

Are Self-Honing Knives easier to maintain than the Forged Cutlery Collection?

Yes, Self-Honing Knives are generally easier to maintain because they feature a self-sharpening mechanism that keeps the blade sharp with minimal effort. This makes them a great choice for those who may not want to invest time in manual sharpening. In contrast, the Forged Cutlery Collection requires regular honing and sharpening to maintain optimal performance.

Which option is better for professional chefs?

Professional chefs often prefer the Forged Cutlery Collection because it provides superior control, balance, and precision. The ability to manually hone and sharpen the blades allows for customization to the chef's specific cutting style. Self-Honing Knives, while convenient, may not offer the same level of performance and customization that professionals seek.

Can I use both types of knives in my kitchen?

Absolutely! Many home cooks and chefs choose to have both types of knives in their kitchen. The Forged Cutlery Collection can be used for tasks requiring precision and control, while Self-Honing Knives can serve as convenient options for everyday tasks. Having a variety of knives allows for flexibility and efficiency in food preparation.
