My aunt work in downtown LA and just emailed me:
We just had an earthquake. Only 5.8 but our building swayed like a tire in a tree swing.

If you feel an earthquake, the first thing to do is to drop, cover, and hold on. Find a sturdy piece of furniture to take cover under, or protect your head and neck with your arms if no shelter is available. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and it is safe to exit.
