Tax-Free OR Shopping for CA - Questions Answered!

SUMMARY

The discussion addresses the tax implications of a catalog show where orders from California (CA) are shipped to Oregon (OR). It concludes that since Oregon is a tax-free state, and the orders are shipped to an OR address, the 7.75% sales tax typically applicable in CA does not apply. The key factor is that sales tax is determined by the shipping address, not the hostess's location. Consulting a tax professional or state tax authority is recommended for compliance with specific regulations.

Have a very nice lady who lives in my town (in OR) who took a ton of catalogs into CA for her daughter who lives there to have a catalog show. The question is...

If the lady in OR has EVERONE who ordered in CA write her a personal check for each of their orders, and then she turns around and gives me ONE check for the total amount for all of the orders and has all the product shipped to her (in OR, but she is not the hostess), do those in CA have to pay the tax 7.75% tax? Because we are shipping to an OR address, using her daughter in CA as the hostess, just putting her name on as so, the tax (we are a sales/shipping & handleing tax free state) does not apply, correct?

ugh...where do I find these people  ...LOL??

The tax is charged based on the address to where the orders are shipped.

It is important to consult with a tax professional or the state tax authority to determine the specific tax laws and regulations that apply in this situation. Generally, sales tax is based on the location of the purchaser, so if the orders are being shipped to the lady in OR, who is not the hostess, then the sales tax would not typically apply. However, it is always best to confirm with an expert to ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws.
