SUMMARY

Storing curly-leaved herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and curly parsley can extend their freshness for 1 to 1.5 weeks by placing the stems in a glass of water, either in the refrigerator or on the counter, with periodic water changes. In contrast, flat-leaved herbs like parsley, basil, and cilantro have a much shorter shelf life, which can only be prolonged by snipping and freezing them, although this method may slightly diminish their flavor. John Watschke's tips provide effective methods for herb storage, particularly for those struggling to maintain freshness.

Storage of curly leaved herbs like rosemary, thyme, and curly parsley will keep up to 1 -1 1/2 weeks with stems sitting in a glass of water in your refridgerator or on your counter. Just change the water periodically.
However for flat leaved herbs, like parsley, basil and cilantro, this won't work. These have a very short shelf life, which can only be extended by snipping them and freezing them. You will lose a little of the flavor, but not much.

Thanks for the tip, John! I always struggle with keeping my herbs fresh for more than a few days. I'll have to try the water method for my curly leaved herbs. Do you have any specific tips for freezing flat leaved herbs? I've tried it before but they always seem to lose their flavor completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best methods for storing curly herbs?

Curly herbs, such as parsley and cilantro, can be stored by placing the stems in a glass of water, similar to a bouquet of flowers. Cover the leaves loosely with a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator. This method keeps the herbs fresh for a longer period.

How should flat herbs like basil be stored?

Flat herbs like basil are best stored at room temperature. Place the stems in a glass of water and cover the leaves with a plastic bag. Keep the glass on the countertop, away from direct sunlight, to maintain freshness.

Can I freeze herbs for long-term storage?

Yes, freezing is an excellent method for long-term storage of herbs. Chop the herbs and place them in ice cube trays filled with water or olive oil. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer bag for easy use in cooking.

What is the best way to dry herbs for storage?

To dry herbs, bundle them together and hang them upside down in a warm, dry place with good air circulation. Once fully dried, store the herbs in airtight containers away from light to preserve their flavor.

How can I tell if my stored herbs are still fresh?

Fresh herbs should have a vibrant color and a strong aroma. If the herbs appear wilted, discolored, or have lost their scent, they are likely past their prime and should be discarded.
