She said she knows how to plan a party!!! :o I was not sure what to say... It was just a conversation about inviting and maximizing attendance... I guess I'll keep a low profile here... Just concentrate on the products so I can sell...

Yeah, some hosts don't want host coaching. All you can do is check up with her in a little bit to see how the RSVPs are going and ask her for a definite head count. Also, try to get her excited about the products then. Ask her if she's had a chance to look through the catalog and which products she is aiming for to get for free. That'll help her decide if she's inviting enough people, etc.

But sometimes no matter what you do, you'll have those hosts that are stubborn and won't take any advice at all (I was one of those when I was a host!).

In the future, just use your new consultant status to say "I'm sure you have a good idea on what to do to have a great party, but I could use your help. I need to practice my host coaching skills -- would you be willing to listen?"

This is a good way when you first start out!

Or just tell her that different people can run their businesses different and you want to make sure she knows "your" way.

This. Just ask her to humor you.

And call your director for more advice.

Just explain that it's something you do for every host and that alot of times guests have a hard time inviting alot of people and need "permission" to get the courage to do it. So it's great that she's on top of that! Then go over the things that don't have to do with party planning - payment, host benefits, wish list, specials, where you'll set-up/format of your show, recipe & ingredients, etc.

I would let it go and just check in with her for invite status and head count. That's really all you need to know anyway, why risk annoying her?

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I say to a host who insists she knows how to plan a party?

It's important to acknowledge her confidence while gently guiding her. You might say, "That's great to hear! I'd love to share some tips and ideas that have worked well for other hosts. Together, we can make this party a success!"

How can I encourage my host to consider my suggestions?

Try to frame your suggestions as enhancements to her existing plan. You could say, "I love your ideas! Here are a few additional strategies that can help maximize attendance and sales. Would you like to hear them?"

What if my host is resistant to my input?

If she seems resistant, listen to her ideas first and validate her approach. Then, you can offer to support her vision by saying, "I completely understand your perspective. I'm here to help in any way you need, so please let me know how I can assist!"

How can I build rapport with a host who thinks she knows everything?

Building rapport starts with showing respect for her knowledge. Compliment her confidence and experience, then share your own experiences in a way that invites collaboration. For example, "It sounds like you've got a great handle on this! I've seen some fun themes that might complement your ideas."

What strategies can I use to ensure the party is successful despite my host's confidence?

Focus on creating a partnership. Offer to take care of specific details that align with her vision, and suggest a pre-party planning session. You might say, "Let's set up a quick call to go over the details together. I want to ensure we cover everything to make your party a hit!"
