I have a host who's daughter was just diagnosed with Celiac. She said someone told her about a celiac shower that people have done, I guess like a wedding shower? Help if you know what I'm talking about. Thanks!

I haven't heard of this before, but I know that it isn't safe to use a stone that has had gluten on it if you have celiac. I just have a sensitivity, so I don't worry about the trace amounts from seasoning the stone myself. If I'm doing a show for someone with celiac, I use parchment paper on the stone because I don't want to risk them getting sick. I say all that because my guess is that a 'celiac shower' would replace all stoneware that the person has and provide other tools that could be useful for cooking differently (like our stackable measuring cups that have the levelling blade for measuring out GF flour, the digital scale and the thermometer, etc.)

Oh, while you probably know this, I'll provide a little expansion on 'gluten' in case someone isn't familiar with it. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It is not in oats, but oats are often cross-contaminated during harvest. If you've done any of the rings, braids or wreathes on your stone with regular crescent rolls or if you've baked regular cookies on your stone, it is 'contaminated' for anyone with celiac.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a celiac shower?

A celiac shower is a gathering similar to a baby shower, but it is specifically designed to support someone who has recently been diagnosed with celiac disease. Friends and family come together to provide gluten-free products, recipes, and resources to help the newly diagnosed individual navigate their new dietary restrictions.

What types of gifts should I bring to a celiac shower?

Gifts for a celiac shower should focus on gluten-free items. Consider bringing gluten-free cookbooks, pantry staples like gluten-free flour or pasta, snacks, and kitchen tools that make gluten-free cooking easier. Pampered Chef products that assist in meal prep can also be great additions.

How can I ensure the food at the celiac shower is gluten-free?

To ensure the food is gluten-free, communicate with the host about the dietary restrictions and plan the menu accordingly. Use only certified gluten-free ingredients, and consider labeling all dishes to avoid cross-contamination. It may also be helpful to ask guests to bring gluten-free dishes to share.

Can I host a celiac shower at a restaurant?

Yes, you can host a celiac shower at a restaurant, but it’s crucial to choose a place that offers gluten-free options and is knowledgeable about cross-contamination. Contact the restaurant in advance to discuss your needs and ensure they can accommodate a gluten-free menu for the event.

What activities can we include in a celiac shower?

Activities for a celiac shower can include gluten-free cooking demonstrations, recipe swaps, or even a gluten-free taste test. You could also have a trivia game about celiac disease and gluten-free living to educate guests while having fun. Incorporating these activities can make the event both informative and enjoyable.
