This thread explores budgeting for meals, drinks, and other expenses during a conference, with participants sharing their personal experiences and tips on managing costs effectively.
Views differ on the best strategies for budgeting and dining, with no clear consensus on a specific amount to bring or the best approach to meals and expenses.
Participants shared personal experiences from previous conferences, focusing on budgeting for meals, transportation, and attire, without implying any official guidelines.
This discussion may be useful for new consultants attending their first conference, as well as those looking for tips on managing expenses during the event.
Last year breakfast was buffet style, lunch was boxed, and dinner was the exec banquest (nice). There was a large seating area with round tables and you could sit where ever you wanted to at McCormick Center (I always sat with people I didn't know and met some really nice consultants).ChefJeniLobdell said:Thanks for all the great tips. What type of things to the venders sell? What are these suprise packs? On Day 2 how are the meals done? Do we have formal meals all together or meals for invidual groups?
I'll definitely be brining my water bottle and some snacks.
We are flying in, so I guess that means tax service? How far is it from the airport to the Hilton?
Oh my goodness you can't even say c0cktail on here!pamperedlinda said:Conference is business casual (no jeans and no hoochie shorts/skirts) Exec Dinner is ****tail attire or a nice outfit.
Yes! I was so shocked last year (my first conference). My Director told me to dress in biz casual and no jeans (who wants to wear jeans in Chicago in July anyhow?!) I saw this girl with a mini-skirt slit so high up the front that there is no way she could have sat down with out showing all of her goodies! And then I saw two girls together who looked like they should be on the beach instead of at a business conference, they were in short shorts and tank tops....very tacky.ChefJeniLobdell said:I love it. hoochie shorts/skirts!! BAAAA. I am guessing capris are acceptable. I am short and that is what I wear alot. I will have to work on the ****tail attire or outfit.
Has anyone shown up to conference in something hoochie before?
To budget meals effectively during a conference, consider planning ahead by researching local dining options and their prices. Look for restaurants that offer group discounts or special deals for conference attendees. Additionally, allocate a specific amount for each meal and stick to it, while also considering packing snacks or quick meals to save on costs.
To save money on drinks, consider bringing a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day. Many conferences provide complimentary water stations. If alcoholic beverages are a part of your conference experience, set a limit on how many you will consume and look for happy hour specials or drink packages offered by the venue.
Budget-friendly snack options include granola bars, trail mix, fruit, or pre-packaged snacks. These items are portable, easy to pack, and can help you avoid overpriced snacks at the conference venue. Additionally, consider sharing snacks with fellow attendees to create a communal experience while saving money.
Yes, it’s wise to budget for goodies or swag, as many conferences offer promotional items or giveaways. Set aside a small amount for purchasing items from vendors or for participating in raffles. This can enhance your experience and provide you with useful products, but be mindful of your overall budget to avoid overspending.
To keep track of your spending, use a budgeting app or a simple notebook to record each expense as it occurs. Set daily spending limits and review your expenses at the end of each day to ensure you stay within your budget. This practice will help you make adjustments if necessary and keep your finances in check throughout the conference.
