SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the effectiveness of catalogs as an advertising tool, with the author reporting the ordering of 450 catalogs for the season. Despite a high initial investment, the author notes a significant decline in show attendance and a low conversion rate, having received fewer than 10 orders from thousands of catalogs distributed over two years. I just ordered catalogs on 5/23 and I opened the drawer where I keep them and they are almost gone! I had to order more tonight, so far this season I have ordered 450 catalogs:money: I hope I get some long term customers by telling them to keep their catalog, they all want the Mango Confetti Salsa recipe. I figure it is my best form of advertising.

Whoa! I have burned through close to 200, but my show schedule is way down.

I went to the pc.com website (not cc) and looked up all the recipes in the catalog (even the ones just pictured and not printed). I copied and pasted them to my PWS in the "news" section.

I also put "SHOW CATALOG ONLY" on all of my catalogs. No one asks to take them unless they REALLY want one (I usually only lose one per show). It has cut the amount of catalog I had to buy sooooo much!

Oh, to answer the question I am sure you will have -- I have given away thousands of catalogs over the last 2 years and have had less than 10 orders coming from them. I no longer see any reason to give my catalogs away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are catalogs still effective for advertising in direct sales?

Yes, catalogs can still be effective for advertising in direct sales. They provide a tangible way for customers to browse products at their leisure, which can lead to increased sales. Many customers appreciate having a physical catalog to refer to, especially when considering larger purchases.

How do catalogs compare to digital advertising?

While digital advertising offers immediacy and broad reach, catalogs provide a personal touch that can enhance customer engagement. Many people enjoy flipping through a catalog, which can create a more immersive shopping experience compared to scrolling through a website.

What are some tips for making catalogs more effective?

To enhance the effectiveness of catalogs, ensure they are visually appealing and well-organized. Include high-quality images, clear descriptions, and pricing information. Additionally, consider incorporating customer testimonials and special promotions to entice potential buyers.

How often should I update my catalogs?

It's advisable to update your catalogs regularly, ideally every season or whenever new products are launched. This keeps your offerings fresh and encourages repeat customers to check back for new items and promotions.

Can I use catalogs in conjunction with digital marketing strategies?

Absolutely! Combining catalogs with digital marketing strategies can create a comprehensive approach. You can use social media to promote your catalog, share digital versions, or even run campaigns that encourage customers to request a physical copy, bridging the gap between online and offline marketing.
