TAX Do you add Tax before shipping or after shipping? I thought you add tax before shipping but P3 is adding Tax after shipping. Please let me know.

I think it depends on what state you are in... I know that in NC you have to tax the shipping but that is not the case in every state.

I do it after. That's the way the order form shows it to be done. So I guess we are charging tax on shipping too.

It's all according to your state (a few don't charge tax on shipping) and then how you have it set up on your program. You might have it set to 0%. You would want to change that or your shows will be held up until they contact you and you will be paying that tax.

It depends on the state you're in. It may look like it's adding it after just because of where it is on the screen. If you do the math, you should be able to check that it's doing it correctly.

Wow. All of us were typing at the same time.

I have the tax % right for the show. But when I hosted a show my consultant had me add the tax before the $4 shipping charge. So that is what I had my host do. But when I put the items into P3 it taxed the shipping too. Which is about .25 difference. I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing for the next show.

On the receipt, it states that shipping is taxable in all states, except: AK, DC, DE, IA, ID, IL, MA, MT, NH, NH, OH, OK, OR, UT and WY.

So, if your show is being shipped to any state other than those listed above, you calculate tax on the total after you add the shipping. If it is one listed above, then you calculate tax on the total before you add the shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Should I calculate sales tax before or after adding shipping costs?

Sales tax should generally be calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes both the product price and shipping costs. This means you would add the shipping costs to the product price first, and then calculate the sales tax on that total amount.

2. Does the method of calculating tax change based on state regulations?

Yes, the method of calculating sales tax can vary by state. Some states require tax to be calculated on the total sale amount including shipping, while others may have different rules. It's important to check the specific regulations for your state to ensure compliance.

3. What if I offer free shipping? How does that affect tax calculation?

If you offer free shipping, you would not include shipping costs in your sales tax calculation since there are no shipping charges to add. You would only calculate sales tax on the product price itself.

4. Are there any exceptions to the rule of taxing shipping costs?

Yes, some states do not tax shipping costs if they are separately stated and the shipping is considered a service rather than part of the sale. Always verify the specific tax laws in your state to determine if any exceptions apply.

5. How can I ensure I am calculating tax correctly for my Pampered Chef sales?

To ensure accurate tax calculations for your Pampered Chef sales, consider using a reliable point-of-sale system or tax calculation software that automatically applies the correct tax rates based on your location and the items sold. Additionally, stay updated on any changes to tax laws in your area.
