I have an opportunity to talk to our local newspaper about being a SAHM and also working with the Pampered Chef. Is there anything that I am not able to say that you know of? Thanks in advance!!:)

I would give HO a call on that one...

I haven't heard of anything. Just speak from your heart!

I would ask Beth (Bethcooks4u) she is really up to date on the rules and regs.

Some guidelines are:
Be sure they're identifying you as an Independent Consultant, so as not to imply you're an employee. That's the biggest thing probably.

Since it's a local paper, you probably don't need to worry about this, but if it's a top 100 newspaper (in circulation), HO would need to be contacted and they'd probably do the interview.

All of the policies about advertising are on consultant's corner. Here's an excerpt from there about newspapers. This would be considered "publicity" as opposed to "advertising" because you're not paying for it.

Publicity: Newspapers
Consultants and above You may submit story ideas and press releases to your local newspapers. With prior written approval from the Corporate Communications Department, you may also submit a recipe for publication in your local newspapers.

The Home Office reserves the right to contact the top 100 newspapers in the US on behalf of all of our Consultants. The top 100 newspapers are listed on Consultant’s Corner under Promoting Your Business, Advertising and Publicity Guidelines and Top 100. Please do not contact these top 100 newspapers.

If contacted by a Top 100 newspaper, you must forward the lead to the Corporate Communications Department at [email protected] for a response.

If you are placing a paid advertisement with a newspaper, please refer to separate policies on advertising.

Hope that helps! How cool to have this opportunity!:)

Becky~

That's great info...thanks for posting it for us!

No problemo!!:)

Becky,

That is great information! I would also add that it is very important that the reporter understand that you are not "The Pampered Chef" and that you are an independent consultant for TPC.

I second the suggestion that you contact HO. They will give you great tips and even some words to use!

Congrats on the opportunity! ...be sure they put your contact information in the article!

I'm working on a feature for the Argus about SAHM moms who are supplementing their family's income by working with companies like Pampered Chef and was wondering if you'd like to talk more about your experiences with me.

This is that the gal asked me specifically!!

Stacie,

I had an interview w/ a local paper last year regarding a fundraiser I was doing.....I called HO about what I could or couldn't say, and basically, other than making sure you identify yourself as an Independent consultant, you can give any info you wish! The lady I spoke to at HO said that as long as it wasn't one of the "Top 100" papers, I was free to promote my business! Good Luch with it and have fun!

Thanks everyone!

Let us know what they end up printing/share your story with us. Have fun with it. :D

Becky, just wanted to chime in, as former newspaper employee before my SAHM days. ;) Don't be surprised or disappointed if you're only briefly mentioned or quoted in the article. You'd be amazed at how much editing takes place from the time the initial interviews are done (and it sounds like the reporter is interviewing several people) to the final layout, and all the people that have access to editing the reporters written piece!

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of negative comments should a SAHM avoid in a newspaper interview?

A SAHM should avoid making negative comments about her children, her spouse, or her lifestyle choices. Criticizing her family or expressing dissatisfaction can reflect poorly on her and may alienate readers who relate to her experiences.

Should a SAHM discuss financial struggles in a newspaper interview?

While it's important to be honest, a SAHM should be cautious about discussing financial struggles in detail. Instead, she can focus on how she manages her budget or finds creative solutions, which can inspire others without dwelling on negativity.

Is it advisable for a SAHM to express strong political opinions in an interview?

It's generally best for a SAHM to avoid expressing strong political opinions in a newspaper interview unless it's directly relevant to her story. Such comments can polarize readers and detract from the main message she wants to convey.

What personal challenges should a SAHM refrain from sharing?

A SAHM should avoid sharing deeply personal challenges, such as marital issues or mental health struggles, unless they are framed in a constructive way. It's important to maintain a level of professionalism and not overshare in a public forum.

How can a SAHM stay positive during a newspaper interview?

A SAHM can stay positive by focusing on her achievements, sharing uplifting stories, and highlighting the joys of motherhood. Keeping the tone optimistic will resonate better with readers and create a more favorable impression.
