Properly Calculate Postage for Selling on This Forum - Tips and Tricks

Click For Summary
Properly calculating postage when selling items in forums involves determining the weight and dimensions of the package. Sellers can use the USPS website to enter the weight and zip codes to find accurate shipping rates. For heavier items, flat rate boxes are often the most economical option. Many users recommend investing in a home postage scale, which can aid in weighing packages accurately and is a deductible business expense. For larger packages, using postal scales at local post offices is suggested, as they are accessible and do not require waiting in line. After shipping, sellers typically email the total cost, including shipping, to the buyer, and most transactions are completed smoothly with prompt payments.

when you sell something in this forum, how do you go about calculating postage properly???? I don't want to over or under charge anyone!
Once I have the answer to this, I will repost my "basement" items! TIA

If you know the weight of the item, you can go to http://www.usps.com and enter your zip and the destination zip. It will ask for the box dimensions and give you the exact rate for that weight.

-or-

you can determine which flat rate box would work for the item. If it's a heavy item, the flat rate boxes would probably be your best bet.

I just bought a used vanilla round deep dish baker off ebay (to match my current collection). It fit wonderfully in the new 12X12 box. The post office also gives a $2 discount on that box to military addresses. So it was only $10.95 shipping vs. $12.95 shipping.

I guess the weight is a struggle unless I go to the PO and weigh it on their package scale.......unless there is other advice!

An inexpensive postage scale for home is a business write off. I have one and love it.

Deb, how big is the scale? I have a small one that wouldn't work for packages larger than the 10x13 envelopes.

You can get one at the PO. It works for packages up to about 10 pounds. Any bigger I take to the PO and use their scale. No line waiting to do that, PO doesn't have to be open either - ours is in the lobby that's always open, and I do it when I have to drop something off anyway - I also drive past the PO nearly every time I go anywhere...

I got my scale on e-bay. It was brend new and works great! I printed off a postage chart from USPS. I use Click-n-Ship for Priority Envelopes, and the scale works great for weighing them, too.

I ship the item then email the person the total plus shipping. Cheffers have always been great about following through on payment.

me too :) There is never a line at the self serve meter at our PO.I don't sell that much stuff to justify buying a scale.
