Hi all,
Finally got my iphone last month and I am loving it!! I find that I use it for so much more than just a phone! I'm trying to think ahead for taxes next year - do I write off the cost of the phone and the data charges? Monthly charges? I bought it to mostly to use for PC, but I also use it for personal use too. I find that I am researching a lot on it, checking & responding to my PC email, PWS, Chef Success, CC and the GPS feature for getting to my shows! How do I figure out my % of usage??
Thanks!

I would consider it a write off, but your accountant, CPA should be able to help with that answer.

You can deduct a portion of your monthly bill for service too. The best advice is to consult your tax professional.

I am an accountant and you can only write off a portion if you use it for personal use also. You can write off a portion of the cost, service charge and data charges. When you take your tax papers to your professional, they will use a formula to calculate the percentage that can be written off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of iPhone expenses can I deduct for my direct sales business?

You can deduct expenses related to your iPhone that are directly associated with your business activities. This includes the cost of the phone itself (if purchased for business use), monthly service plans, apps that are necessary for your business, and any accessories that are used for business purposes. Keep detailed records to substantiate these expenses.

How can I determine the percentage of my iPhone use that is for business?

To determine the business use percentage of your iPhone, track your usage over a representative period. You can log calls, texts, and app usage that are related to your business. Divide the total business usage by the total usage to calculate the percentage, which can then be applied to your deductible expenses.

Do I need to keep receipts for my iPhone-related expenses?

Yes, it is essential to keep receipts for all iPhone-related expenses that you plan to deduct. This includes receipts for the purchase of the phone, monthly service bills, app subscriptions, and any accessories. Proper documentation will help support your deductions in case of an audit.

Can I deduct the full cost of my iPhone if I use it for both personal and business purposes?

No, you cannot deduct the full cost of your iPhone if it is used for both personal and business purposes. You can only deduct the portion that is attributable to business use. Be sure to calculate the business use percentage and apply it to the total cost when claiming your deduction.

Are there any specific apps I should consider for tracking my iPhone expenses?

Yes, there are several apps that can help you track your iPhone expenses effectively. Consider using expense tracking apps like Expensify, QuickBooks, or Mint. These apps allow you to categorize expenses, upload receipts, and generate reports, making it easier to manage your deductions for tax purposes.
