I am making a train cake for my DS's first birthday party tomorrow and am using a loaf pan. I have never made a cake in a loaf pan before and was wondering, do I use the whole cake mix in one pan or divide it between two? The pans are 9x5. Would the temp be the same and what about cooking time? Anyone know??

I would think it would be too much for one loaf but would probably make 2 smaller ones. temp should be the same, time is probably same or longer depending on if you decided to go with 2 mixes or one.

I agree...split it between two loaf pans, keep the temp the same and check it at the "round cake pan" cooking time to see if it's done yet.

Yes, I am making a train cake for my DS's first birthday party tomorrow. I was going to just get Pound Cakes and then bake a sheet cake, but I could only find small pound cakes and those wouldn't work!

DUH.. Laverne..... :)

Too bad you don't have the mini Loaf pan...this way you could have a BIG Engine car & the rest could be smaller ones....;)

Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients do I need to make a train cake in a loaf pan?

To make a train cake in a loaf pan, you'll need basic cake ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, butter, baking powder, and milk. You can also add flavorings like vanilla extract or cocoa powder for a chocolate version. For decoration, consider using frosting, fondant, and edible decorations like candies or chocolate pieces to create the train's features.

How do I prepare my loaf pan for baking the train cake?

To prepare your loaf pan, start by greasing it with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent the cake from sticking. You can also line the bottom with parchment paper for easier removal. Make sure to preheat your oven according to your cake recipe's instructions before pouring in the batter.

What tips can I use to ensure my train cake bakes evenly in a loaf pan?

To ensure even baking, avoid overfilling the loaf pan; fill it about two-thirds full to allow for rising. Additionally, rotate the pan halfway through the baking time for uniform heat distribution. Use a toothpick to check for doneness; it should come out clean when inserted into the center of the cake.

How can I decorate my train cake to make it visually appealing?

To decorate your train cake, start by frosting it with a base layer of buttercream or cream cheese frosting. You can then use colored frosting or fondant to create train cars, wheels, and other details. Edible decorations like gummy candies or chocolate pieces can add fun elements, and using a piping bag can help you achieve more intricate designs.

Can I make the train cake ahead of time, and how should I store it?

Yes, you can make the train cake ahead of time. Once cooled, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. If you want to keep it longer, consider freezing the cake. Just make sure to wrap it well to prevent freezer burn, and let it thaw in the refrigerator before decorating.
