Safe Show Dilemma for Atlantic City Resident: Anywhere You Won't Go?

well... you know. The issue isn't the distance. Its the fact that this is not a stable situation for me. I have to worry about my other job, my kids, and all the other crap that goes along with that. So, no, I would not go more than an hour away from home for a show.

I have someone who filled out a door prize slip at the BRU event and said "Yes" to having a show. She lives in Atlantic City, which given the time of the usual show for me, 7PM and keaving at 9 or 10pm, I don't know if I want to do it because I might not be safe. So... does anyone else go through anything like this?

So how far is it, how long would it take you to get there? You could always have it earlier if you really wanted a show, but you could also try to pass it on if you know someone else who is willing to take it, maybe someone that lives closer? I have driven about 2 hours, which wasn't a big deal since hubby has relatives there and we just used it as an excuse to visit.

O, I forgot, you never know, you might get a recruit out of it.....You could say something about how far a drive it is or whatever and that it would make someone an awesome start by giving them the show leads if they would like to join your team. Just a thought.

I went 1 1/2 hours away and the girl did sign up--she got the leads from 2 shows up that way!!!:D

I also went 1 1/2 hours away. I took my cousin along to help and to feel safe coming home.

You could always invite someone to go with you, the person could help you also and be there for you.

Do you hold Saturday brunch shows? This might be perfect. I start my Saturday (non-bridal shower) shows at 11:00 a.m.

I would personally hesitate to go more than an hour away from home for a show unless I was visiting a relative or friend or had a great potential recruit. That's because I work another FT job. It would be so frustrating to drive a long drive and then end up with a show that barely makes $150 in sales and that was it. Besides if you get bookings and can't get a recruit what are you going to do, give those away? It's just all personal preference. Since I work PC part-time, I have to make good decisions about prioritizing my time. If you've got the time and don't mind, go for it!

I will go about an hour away for a show. But I only do out-of-town shows on the weekend. That's just too far to drive home at 9 or 10 pm.

I do not really have a limit on how far I will go. I have done shows for relative 4 hours (one way) from my home, but I do it on a weekend and stay over. If the show is more than 1 hour from my home it has to be on a weekend as I have a f/t job.

So far I have not turned anyone away. I have never not felt safe and do not really worry about that sort of thing.

I haven't had to think about that yet. All my shows have been local or less than an hour away. I don't know if I would be willing to drive two hours for a show. I would have to take someone with me because I'm not great at reading maps and would probably get lost....LOL

The lady started to have a catalog show and when the orders started adding up, she asked if I would come to her home. She had $425 before I got there and then another $355 at the show for a total of $780. No Bookings but that was okay

And by the way, she closed up that night. It was a Saturday night and I got home about 11:45pm that night submitted the order about 1am on Sunday morning and the order was at her door on Thursday. That has been the quickest show ever.:) :)

Wow Teresa, I bet those were some happy customers at that show.

I have driven 3 hours away for 3 shows. Each of my hosts made certain it was a waste of my time or gas. The shows, from 1st to last, were $770, $808, $1000! I have another 2 shows scheduled with this group of ladies! One in September and another in November! I'm sure they'll be just as successful and eventually I'll get a recruit out of it!

The issue isn't the distance. Its in a city... that has bad neighborhoods and it will be at night most likely.

Every city has bad parts. Is her home in a bad part? I suggest doing what Theresa said and bring a friend along with you if you really feel that uncomfortable.

I have pulled up to some houses and thought, "WOW!! What goes on on this street?!" but nothing has ever happened. Because I know that the Lord travels with me I don't worry too much. I don't PUT myself in compromising positions, but I am not afraid either.

Well, I asked my neighbor whose an AC Cop and his eyes bugged out when I showed him the address and said, "Well, what time is the show?" I told him it would probably be at night. He said, "There are worse parts, but I don't think you should go out there by yourself late at night". So that did it for me, as I trust his judgement. And maybe it was the Lord speaking to me when I just a strange feeling about the pace, which made me ask him. I haven't called the lady, so its no big deal.

I wouldn't do it if you have a bad feeling, but you could say that a catalog show would work better because you don't drive that far normally. That way she gets her host ben. and you feel better.

I have driven 1300 miles one way for a show, but normally no more than an hour each way.

I offer out of town host weekend brunches only - I won't drive in a strange place at night. I also will not go into any areas I feel unsafe with and just talk up catalog shows to them. You might also want to consider asking her if there is someone closer to you that she can "co-host" wit or to consider a catalog show?

Good luck.

I would hate to not give the lady a chance because of where she lives. I may just send her a catalog or give her a call. My friend who's a cop can't camp out at the house, although I'm sure he would. Could you imagine?

Go with your gut!!I say, do a catalog show! I live in NY and have been to AC & I personally would not feel safe. Either bring your cop friend (LOL) or do the catalog show!!! Money and/or recruits are not worth your safety!!! Just my 2 cents :) :)

Do a catalog show or bring your cop with you! Make him wear an apron LOL! Sorry but I have to laugh at the mantal picture I have rightnow! I say if you don't feel safe, don't go. Let her know that you have a policy about going to parts of the city that you don't know at night. I am sure she will understand if she lives in that type of area. Maybe offer to cover the difference in FPV so she still gets cooking show benefits!

He would look pretty cute with the apron!! I'll be sure to tell him it was suggested. He's like the meanest looking cop, too. He and his wife always comes by to sample my new PC recipes.

Where the show takes me....I've gone 2+ hours and have had my best shows ever. Many times when the host realizes & tells her guests how far you've come & much work you've put in; you end up w/ a lot of simpathy (maybe not too many recruits):p but it's worked for me.

I always bring a friend or my mom w/ me if I'm going over 1 hour and travelling late at night. My host's don't mind (I always ask) and she always does my dishes.:D

I might try to "mapquest" the address. Ask people here on the forum if anyone know the area; maybe your director can help you find out. Find out more about the potential host. If she drives a nice car, has young children, lives in a big house (w/ suitable kitchen);) maybe you can get an idea of the neighborhood. Ask do her children play w/ others from the neighborhood? Pool parties? Sports? When you get her talking, you may be surprised at what you find out.

Good luck & drop a dime in a machine if you see one... hey; you never know?!?;)

Well, I won't be going to the site because my cop friend doesn't think its a good idea. And the Casinos are closed right now because of the whole NJ budget crisis. Its the first time since the 70s since they've been closed. SO there is no gambling.

I'm from NY ( DA Bronx:D ) have been to AC many times, I was just talking about it the other day when they closed it down & I said it was TERRIBLE how those casinos cost & make MILLIONS, but the surrounding area is a slum!!! The Boardwalk the minute the sun goes down, has people sleeping on benches & begging for money...terrible!!:( Would not do a show there unless it was in 1 of the hotels;)

And the reason CRDA (Casino Redevelopment Authority) was formed was to improve the city. Some things are better with the CRDA money, but let's not kid ourselves. It IS very scary there. Even during the day.
