Discussion Overview

This thread discusses concerns raised by a participant regarding a neighbor who may soon become a Pampered Chef consultant. The participant received an anonymous call suggesting that the neighbor has misused customers' credit cards in the past, leading to uncertainty about the neighbor's integrity and suitability as a consultant.

Discussion Character

  • Opinion-based
  • Anecdotal
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses excitement about their neighbor potentially signing up but is troubled by an anonymous call alleging credit card misuse.
  • Another participant, identifying as a consultant, shares their concern about the legality of using someone else's credit card without permission.
  • Several users mention the possibility that the anonymous caller may have ulterior motives, questioning the credibility of the claims made.
  • One participant suggests that the original poster should inform the neighbor about the call but ultimately not take responsibility for her actions.
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of not allowing the neighbor to use anyone else's credit cards for shows, citing potential legal issues.
  • One participant raises questions about how the anonymous caller knew the original poster was connected to the neighbor, indicating a need for caution.
  • Several participants express that if the neighbor has a history of credit card misuse, it could pose a significant risk to the community.
  • One participant suggests that if there are suspicions of fraud, it is important to report it rather than rely on anonymous warnings.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Views differ among participants regarding the neighbor's potential as a consultant. Some express strong concerns about her integrity, while others question the validity of the anonymous call and suggest caution before making any judgments.

Contextual Notes

The discussion revolves around personal experiences and opinions related to direct selling and the responsibilities of consultants regarding ethical practices.

Who May Find This Useful

Consultants considering the implications of recruiting individuals with questionable backgrounds may find this discussion relevant.

Good point! You know, that bothers me a bit that someone could sign themselves as my consultant without my knowledge or "permission". I mean it would be REALLY fun to open my email one day and find a new consultant has been added to my team. But it is also a bit disconcerting... at least to me.

Have you heard back from your neighbor yet? I guess for me, I'd take what the anonymous caller said with a grain of salt; HOWEVER, your bolded part above has me confused. How do YOU know this? (I'm not trying to sound accusing, I genuinely want to know how you found out.) Did she come out and tell you this? If her charges are "unbeknownst" to the relative, then there obviously isn't consent. And even if she paid it before the statement came, wouldn't the charge still be on the statement? I don't get it...

Diane -- first off I have to tell you that every time I read your user name I read it as "Diane Evill" & it makes me giggle -- I even hear a Austin Powers' "Dr Evil" my mind. --had to share. :)

I haven't heard back yet -- though that isn't usual for her -- she can be slow to return calls. (Although, if someone called me about a show I was hosting & said there was something they needed to discuss, I'd be on the phone pretty quickly)

I didn't make that part of the mesage BOLD -- someone else did in a quote. Here's what I can clarify...
When I have been in her house she has made a comment along the lines of "I'll put it on my mother's credit card". To which I gave a quizzical look & said something like "You wouldn't really!?!" And she replied, "I'll pay it off before the statement comes. It'll be fine."
Now I don't know how to take that. Does she mean a) it's not wrong b/c I'll pay it back. b) It's okay, mom doesn't mind as long as I pay it off c) I shouldn't, but it's no big deal.

Personally, I have an issue with any of them if she doesn't first ask -- agreement or not. But she clearly has access to the mom's card.

Anyway, here is my new perspective. I won't actively pursue this lead (for this & other reason). If she approaches me I will sign her. But only after discussing this with her.

It is quite possible (& not unlikely) that this is just someone trying to make trouble. I wish I had asked the caller if they went to the police, but at that moment I was thinking that wasn't really any of my business (the calling police bit).
I am actively building my team, so this is all pretty discouraging. I'll focus on other leads & see what happens with all this. Oh the drama!!

wow, this is a tough issue. But, on the flipside, there could be a potential consultant out there who was excited about signing, gave no clues about these kinds of problems, and STILL act fraudulantly (sp??). Believe me because it happened to me. I had a consultant on my team who held a show, took the customers' payments, cashed the checks, but NEVER submitted the show!! This was her first show. She was busted by HO because the host eventually called them to inquire why she hadn't received the products. (HO completely took care of it, refunded all of the customers' money, tried to get the consultant to repay them and since she never did, they terminated her agreement. Now they're pursuing legal action against the consultant).

So, long story short, if she's exhibited this kind of behavior before, there's no telling that she would absolutely do it again AND even if someone has never exhibited that kind of behavior before, there's no telling it still couldn't happen.

It's a hard call even if you knew all the details to be true. What complicates it is who knows what the true story is behind all of this. I'd be curious what your upline director thinks about all of this.

Good luck!:)

My aunt said her dentist told her the same kind of story. A consultant did the dentist's daughter's bridal shower and ran off with all the money. HO did give her all the items that should have been ordered but it still puts a sour feeling in your mouth!

Wow. That's terrible! It totally puts a sour taste in your mouth. I'm appalled that there are people like that out there! The saving grace is that HO is so awesome that they take care of these kinds of things for us.

Oops, "taste" was the word I was looking for but couldn't think of it! And one bad apple can sour the whole group, good thing it only happens far and few between.

Ask my DH - I am a little evil, but only sometimes:angel: .

LOL - I bolded your statement because I was too lazy to retype it.

Hmmm, I wouldn't know how to take her comment, either. I think I'd do the same as you and just wait to see what happens. You'll have to let us know what she says about the call.

Good luck, and PLEASE keep us posted.

BTW, I also had a new consultant who took the money from her first show and used it towards home refinancing costs. She eventually did make good, but first she tried to blame me and then HO. I was at her first show, just observing, and was never near the money, so she had nothing on me, and then she said she submitted the show and PC took the money out of her account but didn't send the show to her. She never had any record of submitting the show or of PC taking the money out. It was a mess, but she left after that first show. Good riddance!

We knew what you meant!;)

And peichef, sounds like you have a good plan! I would just encourage you to make notes (including dates/times/etc.) of your conversations with her... just in case!

Okay, so here is the update.I finally got in touch with my neighbour & she already knew what the issue was,as she had jist had a meeting with someone from her other DS business about it.
According to my neighbour, when she put in a large show for her friend (one of here first shows) she made a big mistake. Apparently, she clicked (or didn't click) on the correct place & some of the order went on the host's cc, rather than coming off the consultant's DS debit.
She says she has straightened it out with her DS company. (They obviously believe her b/c she's still a rep.)
I am inclined to believe her since I know it was after midnight when input that show. She had just started on some new meds that were making her quite loopy. (I was talking to her late that same night, giving her my orders.) If the mistakes on my order (she combined all 3 orders into 1, put them one 1 cc, ordered 3/5 products incorrectly - ie: wrong product &/or size) were any indication, she was "not all there" when she was putting in those shows.
I did not mention the PC opportunity again to her. She did, however, bring it up with me. She is still keen to sign, just unsure if now or after March Break.
We'll see what happens :)
Thanks for all the support & advice. I appreciate it :)
