My roomate has just been diagnosed with gastric reflux disease. Apparently this is more serious than originally thought, and is causing vocal cord damage.I am a singer, and I know I would be devastated if this was my problem! Can anyone think of some healthy recipes that do not involve tomatoes, citrus, spices or a lot of fat? They don't have to be Pampered Chef ... would be good if they weren't ... but they should be healthy and tasty.Roomie has a doctor's appointment tomorrow ... I just got the stuff for the Chicken Tortilla casarole so I'm going to have to make it while I'm alone in the house ... and then I'll just Febreze the kitchen. Please help ... I'm almost afraid to cook at home!

Do you have the It's Good for You cookbook? That would be a good place to start. Otherwise, I'm sure you could go to allrecipes.com & search for low acid.

BTW, Prilosec works well for many...

It's the only thing that keeps me going! LOL

Seriously, I don't have that much problem with Italian type dishes, but give me something with too much citrus in it, and I about die even with my Prilosec.

No, I don't have any current cookbooks .... Maybe that should be a kit enhancement purchase ...The previous doctor already prescribed prilosec ... the specialist is trying to switch to nexium. Meanwhile, Roomie will have to undo some bad habits, like going to bed right after eating ...Thanks for that link ... I did check it out earlier and the thing is, some recipes are confusing ... they use mushroom soup, oregano and even mayo! I thought low acid receipes were supposed to be low in fat and spice too.

Oregano is a pretty mild herb.

Mushroom soup and mayo are creamy and milder too...

When my DH has problems with acid, he just downs some milk. :)

My MIL has chronic acid reflux. Her triggers are chocolate, anything with caffeine, citrus, and raw tomatoes....oh, and also eating at night and then going to bed. She has to sit up straight for a long time after she eats.

One thing you might try also with tomatoes is to buy different colored ones. The yellow and orange varieties have a lower acid content, and can be tolerated better. We grow yellow and orange tomatoes every summer. They are also sweeter than red. We love 'em!

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some healthy recipe ideas for someone with gastric reflux?

Some healthy recipe ideas for someone with gastric reflux include oatmeal with bananas, grilled chicken with steamed vegetables, quinoa salad with cucumbers and carrots, baked sweet potatoes, and smoothies made with non-citrus fruits like bananas and berries. It's important to avoid spicy, fatty, or acidic foods.

Are there specific cooking methods that are better for gastric reflux?

Yes, cooking methods that are gentle on the stomach are recommended. Steaming, baking, grilling, and poaching are preferable to frying or sautéing in heavy oils. These methods help retain nutrients and reduce the likelihood of triggering reflux symptoms.

What ingredients should be avoided in recipes for gastric reflux?

Ingredients to avoid include citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, mint, garlic, onions, and spicy seasonings. Additionally, high-fat foods and fried items can also exacerbate symptoms, so it's best to focus on lean proteins and whole grains.

Can you suggest a simple recipe that is safe for someone with gastric reflux?

Certainly! A simple recipe is baked chicken with herbs. Season skinless chicken breasts with a mix of dried herbs like thyme and rosemary, drizzle with olive oil, and bake at 375°F for about 25-30 minutes until cooked through. Serve with steamed broccoli or green beans for a healthy meal.

How can I modify traditional recipes to make them suitable for someone with gastric reflux?

To modify traditional recipes, focus on reducing or eliminating ingredients that trigger reflux. Substitute high-fat dairy with low-fat options, use herbs instead of spices for flavor, and choose whole grains over refined ones. Additionally, consider using cooking methods that are less likely to cause discomfort, such as baking or steaming.
