Pumpkins are fruits and a member of the gourd family, which includes squash, cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.

- Pumpkins have been grown in North America for five thousand years. They are indigenous to the Western hemisphere.

- In 1584, French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America and reported finding "gros melons." The name was translated into English as "pompions," which has since evolved into the modern "pumpkin."

Despite the widespread pumpkin carving that goes on, few Americans know why or when the "jack o'lantern" tradition began.
People have been making jack o'lanterns at Halloween for centuries. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack."

According to the story, Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink with him. True to his name, Stingy Jack didn't want to pay for his drink, so he convinced the Devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to buy their drinks.

Once the Devil did so, Jack decided to keep the money and put it into his pocket next to a silver cross, which prevented the Devil from changing back into his original form.

Jack eventually freed the Devil, under the condition that he would not bother Jack for one year and that, should Jack die, he would not claim his soul.

The next year, Jack again tricked the Devil into climbing into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While he was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the Devil could not come down until the Devil promised Jack not to bother him for ten more years.
Soon after, Jack died. As the legend goes, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell.

The devil sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern."
In Ireland and Scotland, people began to make their own versions of Jack's lanterns by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits.

In England, large beets are used.

Immigrants from these countries brought the jack o'lantern tradition with them when they came to the United States.

They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit native to America, make perfect jack o'lanterns.

did you hear they want to tax pumpkins in Iowa? Because the governor (or whatever politician) has decided that people use them for decorations not as food.

I was so repulsed. They are taxing EVERYTHING!

The OP is from the History Channel's website. They have a lot of great information on the origins, history and cultural changes through the years for Halloween. They also had a show on today at 6pm and probably other times too called The Haunted History of Halloween that was pretty good (I caught most of it while they pre-empted Y&R for breaking news coverage)...

It's facinating to me to find out about the origins of everything. I listen to NPR and I always have the "ah, so that's where that come from" moments. :) Many holiday's have interesting origins and so do a lot of traditions...

What is the origin of Jack O'lanterns?

The origin of Jack O'lanterns can be traced back to Celtic folklore. The story goes that a man named Jack was a notorious trickster and had a habit of playing tricks on the devil. When Jack died, he was not allowed into heaven because of his mischievous ways. However, the devil also did not want Jack in hell, so he sent him off into the night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack placed the coal inside a carved turnip and has been roaming the earth as a spirit ever since.

Why are pumpkins used to make Jack O'lanterns?

In Ireland, pumpkins were not readily available during the time of the legend of Jack O'lanterns. Instead, they used turnips, potatoes, or beets to carve and place a candle inside. When the tradition came to America, pumpkins were more abundant and easier to carve, so they became the go-to vegetable for Jack O'lanterns.

When did the tradition of carving Jack O'lanterns begin?

The tradition of carving Jack O'lanterns began in Ireland and Scotland during the 19th century. However, it was not until the 1900s that the tradition became popular in America, thanks to Irish immigrants who brought the tradition with them.

What is the significance of carving faces into Jack O'lanterns?

The carved faces on Jack O'lanterns represent the faces of spirits and demons that were said to roam the earth during the Celtic festival of Samhain. They were meant to ward off these spirits and protect homes from evil.

Are there any other traditions associated with Jack O'lanterns?

In addition to being used as a decoration for Halloween, Jack O'lanterns were also used as a way for single women to predict their future spouses. They would place a lit Jack O'lantern in the window, and the first unmarried man to walk by would be their future husband.
