My parents will celebrate their 40th Anniv. Jan. 1. They don't want a party but I'd like to do something special for them. No trips b/c that's not in the budget.

Ideas?

Even if a trip isn't in the budget what about a night or weekend at a local bed and breakfast? Or a spa gift certificate for two? Maybe even just tickets to a show and a night out for dinner.

How about putting together a scrapbook of their 40 years. Ask family and friends from throughout the years to provide photos and stories to go with them, then transfer them into an album. I did this for my Mom's 80th birthday several years ago and it was treasured more than I would have ever thought by my Dad, and Mom.

Q: What are some budget-friendly ideas for celebrating my parents' 40th anniversary on January 1st?

1. Plan a surprise picnic in a scenic location, such as a park or beach, with homemade sandwiches and snacks. Decorate the area with photos and memorabilia from your parents' wedding day.

2. Create a personalized photo album or scrapbook filled with memories and well wishes from family and friends. This thoughtful gift will be cherished for years to come.

3. Host a game night with your parents' favorite board games and snacks. You can also incorporate a theme based on their interests or hobbies.

4. Make a reservation at a local restaurant for a special dinner, and ask the staff to arrange a dessert with "Happy 40th Anniversary" written in chocolate or icing.

5. Plan a movie night at home with a selection of your parents' favorite films and plenty of popcorn. You can also create a cozy atmosphere by lighting candles and serving their favorite drinks.
